District 2-2A
The Panhandle Panthers continue to carry on a proud tradition of strong track and field efforts by taking home District 2-2A team championships on Thursday in Panhandle.
The Ettes blew the competition away with 211 points beating second place Wellington (117) by 94 points. The Panthers was a bit closer but ended up tallying 165 points to hold off Wellington’s 135.
The Ettes were in total control the entire day winning 11 of the 16 events. Carly Land and Nelly Thiessen were the highlights on the day with Land rushing for five gold medals and Thiessen finishing with four.
Land started her morning taking gold in the long jump with a leap of 16.2 1/2 and then won the pole vault by clearing 9-feet. In the running events, Land turned on the jets to get back on the gold medal stand in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.10 while getting two more golds as the second leg on the sprint relay (48.26) and the anchor leg of the mile relay that clocked a 4:13.79.
Thiessen went to work in the morning getting gold in the shot put launching a toss of 39-10 1/2 for her first district championship. In the evening, the senior won the 100-meter dash sprinting to a time of 12.47. Thiessen then won two more gold medals as the anchor leg of the sprint relay and the opening leg of the 800-meter relay that posted a 1:45.87.
Teammates Emery Wright, Alek Winegart and Andrea Garcia also chipped in with individual district titles. Wright won the 3200-meter race with a time of 13:01.19, Winegart claimed gold in the 100-meter hurdle event running a 16.35, and Garcia brought home gold in the discus tossing a 107-10.
The Panhandle Panthers were able to get a district championship thanks to the effort of Cooper Treadwell and Dallas Pennington. Treadwell posted a time of 50.80 to win the 400-meter gold medal. Treadwell was also the anchor leg of the Panthers mile relay team that registered a 3:34.48, and earned a silver on the sprint relay silver medal squad (44.0). Pennington is headed to area in three events as well. Pennington found himself on the podium winning a gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.51. Pennington was also on mile relay team that won gold.
The MVP of the meet came in the field events and that’s Wellington’s Major Brown. Brown put on a quite the display during the jumping events. Brown left Panhandle with three gold medals around his neck starting in the long jump where he popped off a leap of 21-11. Brown then took the triple jump pit, and hit a leap of 43-4 1/2 for his second gold and then took the hattrick when he cleared 6-2 in the high jump.
Highland Park’s Dominic Vega showed his speed Thursday. Vega is a double gold winner thanks to a speedy time of 10.87 in the 100-meter dash and a 22.38 for a victory in the 200-meter race.
The District 1-2A/ 2-2A Area Track and Field Meet is set for Friday in Panhandle.

District 4-2A
The Abernathy Lady Lopes and New Deal Lions are both team champions of District 4-2A following a two-day meet Thursday and Friday in Floydada.
The Lady Lopes were very impressive with 203 points. Emma Klatt was the showcase of the meet for Abernathy. Klatt qualified for area in four events winning gold in the high jump (4-10) and getting second in the long jump (16-8 1/2). Klatt then won gold as a part of the Lady Lopes sprint relay (51.26) and a mile relay team that won with a 4:19.93.
In the field events, New Deal’s Macie Burkhead went double gold winning the discus title (119-8) and the shot put championship (41-9).
On the boys’ side, it was the New Deal Lions scoring 201 points for the team championship.
Jackson Atterbury had a great meet for New Deal winning the gold in the triple jump popping off a 41-11, and was then part of the silver medal sprint relay (43.13) and took bronze in the 100-meter dash (11.35).
However, it was Caden Bird of Abernathy that stole the show. Bird brought home four gold medals starting with a victory in the long jump (23-5 1/4). In the running portion of the meet, Bird won the 200-meter race sprinting to a time of 21.68 and was a part of the Antelopes gold medal winning sprint relay (42.78) and mile relay (3:28.83).
Mason Wright of Post also showed his strength. Wright, a state qualifier last year, tossed a 54-9 to win the shot and launched a 152-3 to claim the discus championship.
The District 3-2A/ 4-2A Area Track and Field Meet is set for Friday in Abernathy.
