It was an extremely long meet due to inclement weather, but when it was all said and done the Gruver Greyhounds and Lady Hounds were able to continue strong athletic years winning the District 1-2A team titles during the District 1-2A Track and Field Meet on Wednesday and Thursday at Greyhounds Stadium in Gruver.

The Greyhounds had a powerful meet with a total of 173 points to win the championship. Sophomore standout Mason Lankford showed his versatility bringing home three gold medals on top of two silvers. Lankford made it a sweep in the hurdle events posting new personal-bests in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.02 and the 300-meter hurdle race clocking a 39.37.

Lankford earned his third gold with another personal milestone by clearing 6-feet-4 inches to win the high jump and was silver as a part of the mile relay (3:32.06) and the long jump (20-9).

Teammate Brock Butler chipped in winning the long jump thanks to a leap of 21-feet, and was second in the pole vault (13-0). Butler also advanced to area getting third in the 300-meter hurdles (40.61).

Sunray was no slouch finishing second with 136 points. Dominic Dominguez blazed a time of 10.55 for a gold in the 100-meter dash. Dominguez is headed to area as well as the second leg on the gold medal sprint relay team that ran a 43.63, and the anchor leg of the winning mile relay squad that posted a 3:28.29. Teammate Kolton Simmons was equally impressive. Simmons won the 200-meter sprint with a 22.22, and was silver in the 100-meter dash (10.64). Simmons also qualified for area as the third leg of the mile relay.

The Gruver Lady Hounds made it a complete team effort scoring 202 points to dominate for a district championship.

Halle McLain went double gold. McLain started her meet by clearing 11-feet for a gold in the pole vault. In the running event, McLain was able to get back on the gold medal podium with a victory in the 800-meter run pacing the field with a time of 2:35.52. Marlee Maupin was stellar in the long distance events for Gruver. Maupin won a gold in the 1600-meter race clocking a 6:04.37, and also won the 3200-meter run outlasting everyone with a time of 13:31.01. Freshman Payton Merkel will head to area in three events. Merkel popped off a 17-4 to win the long jump and earned bronze in the triple jump (34-2 1/4). Merkel was then part of the Lady Hounds gold medal sprint relay team that ran a 50.94, and 800-meter relay (1:51.86), and anchored the mile relay squad to a silver (4:13.12).

There were plenty of individual highlights Wednesday and Thursday.

Stratford’s Madi Braden kept her strong season going. Last year’s state qualifier won both the shot put and discus on Wednesday. Braden launched a throw of 39-feet to win the shot put and tossed out a 129-2 to claim a victory in the discus.

Sunray speedster Jayde Andujo was exceptional. Andujo won both the 100-meter and 200-meter events, sprinting to a time of 12.05 in the 100, then a 26.12 to win the 200. Andujo qualified for a third event as the third leg on the Lady Bobcats gold medal winning mile relay (4:08.06).

West Texas High’s Scout Burris will head to area in four events. Burris won the 100-meter hurdle race with a 15.63 and then made it a sweep with a 46.90 for a gold in the 300-meter hurdle race. Burris also punched a ticket winning a third gold in the high jump (5-0) and took fourth in the triple jump (34-0).

The District 1-2A/ 2-2A Area Track and Field Meet is set for Friday in Panhandle.

District 3-2A

It was a banner day for the Farwell Steers and Olton Lady Mustangs during the District 3-2A Track and Field Meet on Thursday at Younger Field in Tulia.

The Steers won the team district title with a total of 190 points.

Highlighting the meet for Farwell was long distance runner Josiah Lopez. Lopez won three golds taking home titles in all three distance events. Lopez won the 3200-meter race with a time of 10:51.51, then earned gold in the 800-meter clocking a 2:09.90 and rounded out his fantastic day with gold in the 1600-meter run by pacing the field thanks to a 4:50.83. Teammate Chris Reyes chipped in as a double champion. Reyes won the discus tossing a 139-1 and then won gold in the shot put with a throw of 45-0 1/2.

On the girls’ side, Olton tallied 168 points for a team title. Amie Beelitz was strong for the Lady Mustangs qualifying in four events. Beelitz won the long jump (16-10) and the high jump (4-10). Beelitz also made it as a part of Olton’s winning sprint (53.81) and 800-meter relay (1:50.36).

Farwell’s Alexis Wade and Ava Jaime had great afternoons. Wade took victories in the 3200-meter race (12:11.23) and the 1600-meter run (5:30.62). Jaime won the 800-meter race (2:28.62) and then the 400-meter sprint (1:03.07).

The District 3-2A/ 4-2A Area Track and Field Meet is set for Friday in Abernathy.
