It was an action packed Friday and Saturday of district volleyball across Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Check out this recap that saw Dumas edge Hereford in a five-set thriller. Shallowater was able to stay unbeaten in district beating Idalou and Vega opened district with a victory at West Texas High.

District 4-4A

In a match where it came down to the final two points, the Dumas Demonettes were able to hold off Hereford and defend home court in a thrilling five-set match getting the win, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 16-14, on Saturday in a key District 4-4A clash.

The win puts the Demonettes (18-16 overall) two games up on both Hereford (17-17) and Pampa (17-11) for the fourth and final playoff spot at 5-3 in the league. The Lady Whitefaces and Lady Harvesters both sit at 3-5.

Sophie Clements was flat out incredible for Dumas through the entire match Saturday doing her job in all phases. Clements quarterbacked the offense passing out 29 assists, led the front row attacking the net for 15 kills and had 16 digs for a triple-double. If that wasn’t enough, Clements also served extremely well with five aces. Brooklyn Rose complimented Clements with 14 kills and Gabi Holt led the team with 26 digs.

Hereford’s Lilly Madrigal carried on her magnificent season despite the loss nabbing a double-double. Madrigal finished the match with 15 assists and 10 digs. Sam Grajeda led the offensive effort with 11 kills.

Randall remains atop the District 4-4A standings after pummeling Perryton 25-9, 25-19, 25-16, at home Saturday. The Lady Raiders are all alone in first place of District 4-4A after the victory improving to 8-0 and 22-12 overall. Perryton falls to 8-18, 1-7.

Kambree Gonzalez led Randall with 15 digs and Madelyn Sisomsouk added 17 assists. Chloe Brown and Nevaeh Conner combined for 29 kills.

West Plains beat up Borger in three sets getting a 25-23, 25-7, 25-14, win. The Lady Wolves are now 24-11 overall and 6-2 in District 4-4A. Aaniyah Kitchen stepped up on the front row with 15 kills and two blocks. Idaly Sotelo defended the back row with 15 digs and Cecilia Murillo had 26 assists.

Canyon kept pace with West Plains thanks to a sweep of Pampa, 25-13, 25-19, 27-25. The Lady Eagles move to 16-14 overall and 6-2 in district. Pampa falls to 17-11 overall and 3-5. Laney Jones came away with a double-double for the Lady Eagles knocking down 17 kills and laying out for 14 digs. Brylee McElroy had 27 assists.

District 5-4A

Lubbock-Cooper Liberty opened the second half of District 5-4A by staying unbeaten taking the season sweep of Frenship Memorial. The Lady Patriots outpaced the Lady Panthers on Friday leaving their home court with a 25-18, 25-16, 25-9, win.

The Lady Patriots keep on rolling at 7-0 in district play and 34-2 overall. Memorial is now 5-2 in district and 22-8. Campbell Beeler had 10 kills for Liberty with Lexie Allgood tallying eight.

In the other district games Saturday, Big Spring swept Lubbock Estacado (25-17, 25-16, 25-10) and Levelland defeated San Angelo Lake View (25-27, 25-18, 25-23, 26-24).

District 3-5A

In the game of the district Saturday, Lubbock-Cooper avenged a loss in the first round of league play knocking off Lubbock Coronado in a grueling five-sets, 25-22, 22-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-10. The win puts the Lady Pirates (19-10) a half a game ahead of Coronado (19-16) for third place in District 3-5A at 7-3. The Lady Mustangs are currently at 7-4.

Cooper’s Konli Johnson stepped up with a double-double outing blasting 11 kills with 16 digs. Teammate Bry Carlile had a game-high 20 kills and Broox Lopez was stellar handing out 49 assists. Coronado’s Hailee Parrott did all she could with 19 kills and 13 digs for a double-double and teammate Kaleigh Smith added 17 kills with six digs.

Amarillo High kept on cruising with a season sweep of Plainview, 25-7, 25-12, 25-8, on Friday. The Lady Sandies (25-8) stay in first place at 11-0 in District 3-5A. The Lady Bulldogs slip to 12-18, 3-8. Harper Vaughn continued her strong sophomore campaign with 13 kills and 10 assists for a double-double. Bennett Rea had a team-high 20 assists and Ellen Head hit the hardwood for 15 digs.

Also Saturday, Tascosa stayed one game back of Amarillo High in the standings with a sweep of Lubbock High, 25-12, 25-12, 25-9. The Lady Rebels rolled behind Berkley Harper’s nine kills and Harlan Singleton with eight. Bennet Berryman and Gabbie Mason combined for 22 digs. Berryman totaled 12 and Mason registered 10. Tascosa (23-9) is sitting at 10-1 in District 3-5A.

In one other score from Friday, Lubbock Monterey defeated Caprock 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22. The Lady Plainsman (23-12) remain in the chase for a playoff spot at 6-5 in the league.

District 2-3A

With first place on the line, it was the Shallowater Fillies coming away with a big-time four-set win at home against Idalou, 25-8, 22-25, 25-8, 25-17, on Saturday afternoon.

Shallowater moves into sole possession of first place of District 2-3A at 4-0 and are now 25-9 overall. Idalou (19-13) drops to 3-1 in the league. Emma Clawson paced the offense with a game-high 19 kills and added six digs. Teammate Aniston Vanatta had 29 assists with 10 digs for a double-double.

Childress got a win Saturday downing Tulia 25-19, 25-12, 25-14. The Lady Bobcats improve to 2-2 in District 2-3A and 14-18 overall. Tulia falls to 10-10 on the year and 0-4 in district. Journey Prince was the star of the game for Childress slamming down 21 kills. Teammate Avery Keys had eight kills.

In one other district match, Lubbock Talkington swept Littlefield 25-21, 25-23, 27-25.

District 1-2A

The Vega Lady Longhorns picked up where they left off last year by opening District 1-2A with a win Saturday. The reigning district champions and UIL Class 2A Division II regional finalist, were able to get by West Texas High on the road 25-17, 25-13, 23-25, 25-21.

Outside hitter Khloe Griffitt help set the tone in the victory putting together quite the performance. On the front row, Griffitt led the attack with a team-best 10 kills and on the back row paced the defensive effort with 12 kills for a double-double. Teammate Kai’lan Sturgeon complimented Griffit playing big at the net with nine kills and getting four blocks while McCauley Brorman served up six aces to go with six kills.

Vega (14-19) opens district at 1-0. The Lady Comanches (6-14) fall to 0-1 in the league.

On Friday, Sanford-Fritch took care of business in its district opener with a handling of Highland Park, 25-17, 25-13, 25-22. The Lady Eagles push their record to 16-8 overall but more importantly to 1-0 in 1-2A. The Lady Hornets (10-19) fall to 0-1.

Emma Williams, Sydney Riggle and Allison Lovejoy along with Bryleigh Carr were the catalyst of success for Fritch. Williams powered down a team-best 13 kills, Riggle and Lovejoy each had 12 assists and Carr did the dirty work nabbing 13 digs.

Despite the loss, Haley Rogers had 10 assists for the Lady Hornets and teammate Kaitlin Lucas worked for 12 digs.

District 1-1A

The Fort Elliott Lady Cougars stayed all alone in first place with a sweep of Shamrock 25-20, 25-14, 25-15, on Saturday. The Lady Cougars remain perfect in District 1-1A at 8-0 and are 22-6 on the year. The Lady Irish fall to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in district. Jaycee Sewell had a monster effort for Fort Elliott passing out 33 assists to go with 14 digs for a double-double. Sewell also added five kills. Jaylie Dickey also had a double-double with 18 digs and 10 kills for Fort Elliott.

Miami stayed right behind Fort Elliott in the standings taking down Wildorado in four-sets on the road Saturday, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-18. The Lady Warriors sit at 7-1 in the league and 15-6 overall. The Lady Mustangs fall to 4-4 in District 1-1A and 7-18 on the season. Bentley Brooks put together another double-double effort for the Lady Warriors with 16 digs and 20 assists. Harper Hale also played outstanding defense with 16 digs and added four aces. Teammate Ava Lackey led the team on the front row with 13 kills followed by Brylee Thompson’s eight.

In two other district scores from Saturday, Kelton swept Channing, 25-3, 25-5, 25-2, and White Deer edged Darrouzett in five sets, 21-25, 25-17, 25-13, 22-25, 15-10.

Quick hits

The Frenship Lady Tigers were able to bounce back from a loss Tuesday by beating Odessa Permian 25-23, 25-13, 25-23, on Friday night in a District 2-6A battle. The Lady Tigers (23-13) are atop the league standings at 3-1. Senior standout Bliss Dane registered a double-double with 20 digs on the back row and 12 kills on the front row. Teammate Reese Roberts also accomplished a double-double getting 13 kills with 12 digs.

In a District 1-3A match, Friona downed Dimmitt 25-8, 25-15, 25-12. Ella McFarland paced the Squaws handing out 25 assists which benefited Aubree Bunker, who tallied 19 kills. Friona (18-5) moves to 2-1 in District 1-3A.

San Jacinto Christian Academy picked up another win beating Midland Holy Cross 25-13, 25-13, 25-7. The Lady Patriots (26-5) stay in second place of TAPPS District 1-2A at 7-1. Blayne Robison was all over the court dishing out 27 assists, Jenni Bell had a great night serving with four aces and Channing Starr played big at the net with three blocks. In two other scores, Holy Cross Catholic Academy fell to Lubbock All Saints 25-7, 25-6, 25-10, and Ascension Academy came up short against Christ the King, 25-16, 19-25, 25-12, 25-18.
