On the court: Canyon couldn’t ask for a better start to District 4-4A or a better start to how Laney Jones has soared through the first two wins against Pampa and Hereford. On the season so far, Jones has put together a stellar season knocking down 297 kills to go with 195 digs and 23 aces.

Coach Sara Morath: “We have started district very strong but we have suffered a couple of setbacks with some injuries. This team has been really good about handling the adversity and overcoming what’s in front of them and that’s been great to see. Laney is a big reason why we’ve been able to handle that because she is so chill. Nothing phases her and she does such a great job leading this team. Her first two years on varsity were a transition for her. We had so many veterans we were just finding a place and she played a lot of places. Now she has a true role on this team and it’s great to see. She has such a high volleyball IQ and she shines in the rotation.”

Jones: “I feel like we’ve been playing really well and there is a lot of chemistry on this team. We have lost some key starters recently but we have had some girls step up and that has helped a lot especially in district. I think for myself, I’ve come a long way this year. I feel like I’ve developed into more of a leader by leading on the court and off the court. I feel assertive with my play on the court because I’ve found a role and I’m playing better all the way around in all aspects.”
