Texas Panhandle teams had a solid showing battling the best teams and the extremely hot weather during the 7-on-7 State Football Tournament at Veterans Park in College Station from Thursday through Saturday.
In the Division I pool, the Palo Duro Dons made quite the splash the programs first showing at College Station. The Dons went 2-1 during Friday’s pool play led by quarterback Julian Reese II. Palo Duro opened action running away from Azle 33-13, then fell to The Woodlands 14-7 before ending the day with a win against West 12-7 to go 2-1 on the afternoon.
The Dons headed to Saturday’s championship bracket play falling to Jordan 26-7.
The veteran Dumas Demons, making a sixth straight appearance in College Station, won their Division II pool on Thursday going 2-1. The Demons knocked off Paris 19-7 and Cuero 31-6. Dumas did lose to China Springs 36-32 and were defeated by Lake Dallas an opening round bracket game Friday 27-14.

In Division III, the Sunray Bobcats were making their third straight appearance. A young Bobcat team struggled in pool play going 1-2. Sunray lost to Wallis Brazos 24-6 and Sonora 21-12 but was able to pull off a come-from-behind win to stun Lexington 28-27. In Friday’s championship bracket game, Sunray came up short to Rio Vista 32-14.
Hale Center made the most of its first appearance at the 7-on-7 State Football Championship. The Owls got off to a slow start falling to Trinity 32-27 and Granado 33-13. However, Hale Center ended pool play beating Goldthwaite 26-14 and carried that momentum into a championship bracket win 28-16 against Wolfe City before being defeated by Poth 21-18 in the round of 16.
