With the turn of the calendar to June, there wasn’t a better way to get the Amarillo Major Golf Tournament schedule going than with an exciting three days during the Dos Equis Championship that resided between the Comanche Trails and Ross Rogers Golf Complex’s from Friday to Sunday.
The final round on the Mustang layout of Ross Rogers even had quite the flair for the dramatics to kick off the 2025 schedule with Andrew Brewer defending his Dos Equis championship by outlasting Luke Kane with a birdie on the third playoff hole to win the summer’s first major Sunday evening.
Brewer has now punched his ticket to a very familiar place and that’s the Coors Tournament of Champions which is set for Aug. 14-17.
Brewer is no stranger to the Coors TOC finishing second last year and winning that championship in 2019.
To earn his win Sunday on the Mustang course, Brewer had to give a gallery of fans following a little extra golf than anticipated. With Brewer and Kane both tied at 20-under-par after the 54th and final hole of the championship, the two went on to a sudden death playoff.
In that playoff, both Brewer and Kane made par on No. 1 and birdied the par-5, No. 2-hole. On the third hole, Brewer hit a massive drive leaving him within 40-yards of the green. On his approach chip, Brewer stuck the ball 10-feet from the hole and was able to knock down his birdie putt while Kane tallied a par.
“I saw the line right off the bat,” Brewer said. “I wanted to make sure my putt got there, and it did. It was fun to be able to win and defend this title. It was also fun to play with some great guys including Luke (Kane) who is one heck of a player. I’m just excited to be playing in the Coors Tournament of Champions again.”
Brewer shot a bogey free round of 64 on Sunday that included seven birdies. Brewer opened things up Thursday with a 68, five shots back of Drew Hermesmeyer, who finished third overall at 18-under-par. On Saturday, Brewer came out firing shooting a 64 to get right back in the mix setting up an exciting Sunday.
“The first round was rough,” said Brewer, who had a 54-hole score of 196. “I made some dumb mistakes the first day and the second day I wanted to turn it around. I had some good birdies but a bad shot on 17. But Friday got me right back in the mix. Sunday was back and forth all day long. The front nine was calm but when I got to 15 and 16, I started to feel the nerves. Everyone was trading the lead between the four of us. Luke (Kane) made it look easy on the back nine, he was such a good player.”
Kane took second at 20-under-par for the tournament shooting rounds of 67-63-68 for a 196. Former Wayland Baptist University golfer Ian Ansett was fourth with a three-day total of 201 and Tate Allred rounded out the top five with a 54-hole total of 202.
In the senior division, Dario Garza was the champion and has earned a spot in the senior Coors Tournament of Champions. Garza shot an opening score of 70, followed by a 66 on Saturday and a 72 on Sunday.
