Ascension Academy impresses at TAPPS Class 2A North Regional track and field meet

The Ascension Academy track and field teams had a strong showing during the TAPPS Class 2A North Regional meet Friday afternoon on the campus of UT Arlington.

Both the boys and girls teams finished fourth overall sending multiple athletes to the TAPPS Class 2A state meet set for Friday and Saturday at Waco Midway High School.

The Cardinals, who scored 57 points, were showcased by a pair of top performances from Roman Martinez and Owen Chow. Chow qualified in two events. Chow won the 400-meter run with a time of 50.07 for the gold medal. He was also part of the mile relay team that qualified getting a silver medal clocking a 3:35.28.

Martinez carried on with his fantastic season breaking his own school records Friday. Martinez will head to state with some serious momentum after breaking his school mark in the 800-meter run getting a time of 2:03.02 for his first gold. His second gold came when he broke his own school record in the 1600-meter running a gold medal time of 4:41.15. Martinez also qualified as part of the silver medal mile relay team that ran a 3:35.28.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Cardinals are sending three individuals to the state track meet. Kathleen Bartley won the gold medal clearing 9-6 in the pole vault and finished and helped the sprint relay to a fourth place finish (54.83). Teammate Harper Cowan took silver in the pole vault with a leap 8-feet and was on the sprint relay team and Carleigh Carlson advanced in the 300-meter hurdles getting fourth place (54.74).

San Jacinto Christian Academy’s Marshall Mincher had quite the afternoon punching a ticket to state in four events. Mincher won the gold medal in the long jump launching 19-8 1/2. He earned bronze in the 110-meter hurdles (17.35) and was fourth in the 200-meter sprint with a 23.34. He was also part of the Patriots sprint relay team that ran a fourht place time of 45.72.

SJCA teammate Ben Myers will join Mincher at state throwing a 41-8 3/4 to get fourth in the shot put.
