Amarillo ISD athletes took center stage during the District 3-5A track and field meet at Plains-Capital Park at Lowrey Field in Lubbock on Wednesday and Thursday.
Making the most noise during those two days were the Amarillo High track teams which claimed both District 3-5A championships. The Lady Sandies stacked up 163 points which was 50 points better than Lubbock-Cooper’s 113. The Sandies followed suit to complete the sweep as the AHS boys team tallied 125 points to edge Lubbock-Cooper with 110.

Between the sprint relay, the 800-relay and the mile relay, AHS earned 60 points getting gold in all three events. The sprint relay team of Sienna Cavalier, Sofia Quiles, Novia Castleberry and Memori Hibbler help set the tone in the opening race clocking a gold medal time of 49.49. The 800-meter relay squad of Castleberry, Ca’Nia Mitchell, Sophia Webb and Hibbler then ran an impressive 1:43.61. The 1600-meter relay then capped off the fantastic day with Quiles, Stella Crawford, Willow Cornell and Sierra Cornell putting on a strong showing to win gold with a 3:58.67.
On top of those performances, Willow Cornell also took home gold in the 300-hurdles sprinting to a 43.89.
Like she has all year, Tascosa’s Saphina Stanley continues to put on terrific performances and that happened once again Wednesday and Thursday. Stanley qualified for the area meet in five events winning two gold medals and bringing back three silvers.
Stanley won gold in the long jump popping off a 17-9 to open the meet. Her second gold medal came in the 400-meter race where Stanley sprinted to a strong time of 56.51. Stanley was able to then get silver as a part of the mile relay team that ran a 4:06.80 as well as in the triple jump (36-10) and the 100-meter dash (12.40).
Other Amarillo ISD winners included Palo Duro’s Jazzlyn Brown. Brown punched a ticket to area by winning the 100-meter hurdles with a 15.14. Amarillo High’s Ava Rahlfs won the shot put with a toss of 40-8 and Caprock’s Cailyn Lott claimed gold in the pole vault thanks to clearing 10-6.
Lubbock-Cooper’s Niomi Wines made an argument for MVP of the meet. Wines won the high jump clearing 5-foot-8 and then took home gold in the 100-meter dash clocking a 12.16. She also won the 200-meter race with a 24.08.
The AHS boys relay teams had strong showings that catapulted the Sandies to a district title. It started with the sprint relay squad of Bryson Brown, Aiden Bailey, Oliver Parsons and Creed Cavalier. That foursome found the gold medal hauling to the finish line with a time of 42.44. The Sandies then bookended he meet getting gold once more in the mile relay behind the team of Bailey, Jude Dunavin, Jaelym Glover and Logan Jackson had a superb time of 3:22.79.
Glover helped the team with a silver in the 400-meter run (50.47) and Cavalier earned a bronze in the long jump (21-8 3/4). However, leading the Sandies in the field events was Hunter Spier. Spier won the gold medal in the discus launching a 153-1 and took silver in the shot put 153-1.
Palo Duro’s Abdirisak Saidgurhan and Caprock’s Alhosan Sheriff had stellar days advancing to area in multiple events. Saidgurhan added to an already stacked trophy case dominating the long-distance events with three gold medals. Saidgurhan first won the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:44.49. In the afternoon, Saidgurhan won the 800-meter with a time of 2:00.24 and finished his day by getting gold in the 1600-meter run pacing the field with a 4:33.38.
Caprock’ Sheriff edged Palo Duro’s Vern Blair to nab gold in the 110-meter hurdles sprinting to a 14.56. Sheriff also qualified in the triple jump getting silver with a leap of 45-8 1/2. Palo Duro’s Kyron Brown won the 300-meter hurdles racing to a 39.37. Lubbock Coronado impressive speedster Allen Gant continues to turn heads. Gant’s speed was on full display winning the 100-meter dash with a 10.66 and the 200-meter race with a 21.46.
