The Amarillo Wranglers played a three-game series with the division leading Lone Star Brahmas this past weekend. The Amarillo Wranglers fell in two of those three matchups suffering a 3-0 loss Friday and a 3-1 defeat Saturday. The Wranglers were able to avoid the sweep getting a 2-1 victory Sunday.
The Wranglers are currently 19–28-1–3 with 42 points sitting eight points out of the last playoff position in the North American League South Division with eight games left in the regular season.
Amarillo is back on the road this weekend to battle the Colorado Grit.
Friday and Saturday’s games
Friday night’s game saw a defensive struggle and great goalie play from Amarillo goalie Matt Schoephoerster, stopping 22-of-23 shots. With time running out head, coach Corey Wogtech pulled Schoephoerster as the Brahmas were able to score two empty net goals pulling away for a 3-0 win.
Saturday night, both teams were locked into a defensive battle until just a few minutes before the end of the third period when, at the 19:11 mark, the Brahmas scored their third empty net goal of the weekend, giving them a 2-1 lead with 49 seconds left in the game. Lone Star immediately scored again with 11 seconds left in the game, bringing the final to 3-1.
Sunday’s game
Amarillo scored first when Noah Wood received an electrifying feed from Hayden Hedquist, giving the Wranglers the early 1-0 lead. Three minutes later the Brahmas answered and trickled one by Amarillo goalie Matt Schoephoerster, as this game remained tied going into the first intermission. Both goalies put on a net-minder clinic as Amarillo outshot the Brahmas 9-5 with no scoring in the second period or third period. With just 39 seconds left in the game, the Brahmas were called for holding as this game remained scoreless in regulation.
Heading into overtime in the power play with a man advantage ignited a very large and enthusiastic Sunday afternoon crowd. Cole Saterdalen enthusiastically found the back of the net to end this very exciting and typical southern division rivalry game.
Amarillo goalie Schoephoerster saved 30-of-31 shots, giving him his 11th victory of the season, keeping Amarillo’s playoff chances alive.
Another local Amarillo player tenders with the Wranglers
Amarillo native Cutter Daniels has tendered to play hockey for the Amarillo Wranglers in the 2025-2026 season. This is the second local player to have tendered with the organization in as many weeks.
Daniels started his hockey journey here in Amarillo as a star forward for the youth hockey program headed up by Amarillo Wranglers owner Austin Sutter. Daniels went on to play for the Odessa Junior Jackalopes, West Texas Selects and most recently playing in the NA3HL for the Texas Roadrunners. Daniels is an outstanding young man who comes from a prominent and traditional Texas based family. He should be a major contributor for the Wranglers moving forward. Daniels will be reporting to camp for the Amarillo Wranglers at the end of the summer.
Amarillo Wranglers announce college commits
Wranglers Captain Morley Phillips announced his commitment to Sunny Cortland University. Located in Cortland, N.Y., this midsize university is a great opportunity for Phillips to take his game to the next level.
Wranglers defenseman Jean Sebastian Pack also announced his commitment to Augsburg University. This fantastic private university located in Minneapolis, Minnesota is known for its biology and marketing departments. This is sure to be a great institution for Pack to take his game to the collegiate level.
