Canyon has strong showing at Pirate Relays

The Canyon boys were able to leave Lubbock-Cooper as the champions of the Pirate Relays scoring a total of 115 points while the Lady Eagles racked up 121 points to get second as a team behind Frenship (152) on Thursday and Friday.

As expected, Lady Eagles made a lot of noise at the meet with a stacked team. Addison Bristow, who currently holds the fastest times in the state of five events, had another stellar meet. Bristow dominated the 400-meter run clocking a 57.53 to capture gold. The junior then took home gold medals in the 1600-meter race (4:49.23) and as a part of the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:57.82.

Teammate Brooklyn Kinsey also had a superb outing. The senior standout started the track meet popping off a leap of 17-feet-8 inches to win the triple jump. Kinsey was able to capture two more gold medals in the 300-meter hurdles (46.38) and as a part of the 1600-meter relay (3:57.82).

On the boys’ side, Ryan Fernandez of Canyon was excellent per usual in the distance events. Fernandez won a pair of gold medals in the 800-meter run (2:00.58) and the 1600-meter run (4:23.66). Caprock’s Alhosan Sheriff turned heads with a big weekend. Sheriff won the triple jump with a leap of 45-3 1/2. During the running events, Sheriff won the 110-hurdles with a 14.7 and took silver in the 300-meter hurdles (40.34).

Tascosa sweeps Randall Invitational

The Tascosa boys’ and girls’ teams made it a clean sweep during the Randall Raider Invitational on Thursday at Randall High School.

The Lady Rebels registered 170 points to edge Randall (168) by two points. The Rebels dominated boys action racking up 191 points.

The Rebels were dominant in the relay events. Josh Fields helped being on legs of two of those gold medal performances. Fields helped the Tascosa sprint relay clock a gold medal time of 43.08 and was a part of the 800-meter relay team that won with a 1:31.40. Fields earned his third goal by sprinting to a 22.01 for the 200-meter dash gold medal. Randall’s Cody Mayheu was clutch in the hurdle events. Mayheu swept both hurdle races with a time of the 15.24 in the 110-hurdles followed by a 42.33 in the 300-meter.

In girls’ action, Saphina Stanley once again highlighted the Lady Rebels. The sensational senior won gold in the triple jump (36-1) and the long jump (18-7 1/2). In the running events, Stanley claimed gold in the 100-meter dash blazing a time of 12.09 and won the 400-meter race clocking a 1:02.31. Stanley won a silver in the mile relay with her Tascosa team running a 4:08.

The Dalhart track and field teams defended home turf sweeping the team championships during the Dalhart Relays on a blustery Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Wolves won by racking up 171 points while the Lady Wolves scored 160 points for the team title.

Hunter Trusler had an exciting meet for Dalhart helping the Golden Wolves to gold medals in the 400-meter relay (43.52) and the 800-meter relay (1:34.84). Trusler won his third gold of the day in the long jump (21-2 1/4). Stratford standout and Air Force Division I football signee Bryce Braden showcased his skills. Braden is healthy and it shows winning both throwing events. Braden tossed a 51-9 to bring home gold in the shot put and popped off a 164-5 for the discus championship.

Reese Jenkins and Katelin Sundvahl led the Dalhart girls to victory. Jenkins ended Thursday with four gold medals. Jenkins claimed the pole vault title leaping 11-feet. From there, Jenkins went on to a strong running day by first grabbing gold in the 100-meter dash (12.11), then a gold in the sprint relay (50.49) and the 800-meter relay (1:51.77).

Sundvahl was also a part of the sprint relay team that won for Dalhart. She then won both hurdle events with a time of 15.37 in the 100-hurdles followed by a 47.31 in the 300-meter hurdles. Sundvahl added more hardware winning the long jump at 16-4 1/4 and took bronze in the triple jump (32-10 1/2).

The Canadian Lady Cats also saw two top performers. Long distance star Konnar McClendon won gold in the 3200-meter race (12:00.84) and the 1600-meter run (5:43.39). Teammate Arionna Black won the 400-meter run (1:02.65) and the 800-meter (2:27). Black was also a part of the mile relay team that clocked a 4:17.

District quick hits

Dumas dominated by sweeping the Perryton Relays on Thursday. The Demons scored 166 points for the boys title while the Demonettes finished with 172 points. Imanol Marquez led the Demons winning the 100-meter dash (10.62) and was silver in the 400-meter run (54.23). He was also part of the gold medal winning mile relay (3:32.82). Rayleigh Thornburg paced the Demonettes nabbing a gold in the 100-meter dash (13.06) and on the winning sprint relay teams time of 51.62.

The Ascension Academy boys team won their fourth straight Groom Relays championship. The Cardinals got that title totaling 96 points. Long distance talent Roman Martinez made a medal haul. Martinez won gold in the 800-meter race (2:10.24), the 1600-meter run (5:02.40) and the 3200-meter event (11:16.30). The McLean girls won the team title with 106 points. Hope Moon won both throwing titles with a 37-3 in the shot put and a 102-2 in the discus. Silverton’s Maddie Francis had three gold medals starting in the long jump at 16-6 1/2. Francis swept the hurdle events clocking a 16.1 to win the 100-hurdles then a 47.6 to win in the 300-meter hurdles.
