That’s easy to see growing up in a hoop’s town like Gruver and her father, Troy, coaching the Gruver boys basketball program for several years.
“Basketball has always been my love,” Seagler said. “I was always at the gym with my dad. It was always so much fun to be with him and grow up around the game I love.”
Seagler went on to be a tremendous player for the Lady Hounds. During her time the 2016 graduate led Gruver to a state championship appearance, she was a three-time District MVP and a three-time All-State selection.
From there, Seagler excelled at the college level for Seward Community College and at Oklahoma City University. Seagler was on extremely successful teams, earning Sooner Athletic All-Conference honors while at OCU playing for then head coach Bo Overton.
“When Brennyn played for me at OCU, it was like having another coach on the floor,” Overton said. “She was a very talented player, she was a leader, and she knew the game very well. I had to have her come coach with me. She always knew what I was thinking, and we were always on the same page.”
Seagler has been on the bench as an assistant for OBU and coach Overton the past five years and has enjoyed every minute of it.
“Coach Overton recruited me and I loved playing for him at OCU,” Seagler said. “Being able to coach with him is a blessing. He does a great job of constantly teaching me new things. He’s trusted me to handle the travel, the scouting and watching a lot of film. I’ve learned how to communicate better as a coach and see things from a different perspective than when I was a player.”
Overton echoed Seagler’s comment.
“You can’t ask for a better young coach than Brennyn,” Overton said. “She’s very organized and has done a great job building relationships with players. We have a lot of trust in her and she is one of those type of coaches that checks all the boxes.”
One thing Seagler has learned through her short journey in the coaching world is taking a little bit from those before her, whether it’s Overton, her father, Gruver girls coach Trent Lankford or former Seward coach, Toby Wynn. Seagler never forgets her mentors.
“I learned a lot from my dad,” Seagler said. “But I had coach Lankford and coach Wynn that all made me better and I’m their biggest fan and now they’re mine. They are always encouraging and will do whatever they can to help me.”
Lankford keeps in touch with Seagler to this day and isn’t shocked at all with what he’s seeing from her coaching success.
“Brennyn is a hard worker and the type of person that always pays attention to the details,” Lankford said. “She was always coachable and is still coachable now. I’m just so proud of her and love seeing her succeeding at the next level.”
