Canyon cruises in District 4-4A opener
It was the first loaded night of girls’ district play across the Texas Panhandle that included a very good District 4-4A getting underway.
The tradition-rich Canyon Lady Eagles picked up where they have left off for years and that’s winning league ball games.
The Lady Eagles opened their district schedule by going on the road and taking care of Pampa 58-44 at the McNeely Fieldhouse on Tuesday to get things going on the right foot.
The Lady Harvesters actually held an early lead to end the first quarter 13-10. Canyon took the momentum back in the second outscoring Pampa 16-4 to go up 26-17 at the break.
Sydnee Winfrey led the Lady Eagles scoring a team-high 11 points. Despite the loss, Berlin Bartlett of Pampa paced all scorers with a game-high 24.
Canyon is off to a 12-3 start to the year and 1-0 in 4-4A while Pampa falls to 5-11 and 0-1.
Randall holds off Perryton in OT
In one of the better games of the night, Randall escaped a long road trip up to Perryton, sneaking past the upset-minded Rangerettes 55-50 in overtime in a District 4-4A opener Tuesday night.
Perryton gave Randall fits taking an 18-9 lead after one and 22-17 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Raiders found themselves trailing after three but outscored the Rangerettes 20-12 in the final frame to force overtime. In overtime Randall seized momentum to pull away for the win.
Kennah Thomas poured in a team-high 16 to lead the Lady Raiders. Tenera Gray and Layla Romero each had 13.
Perryton’s Aubrey Daugherty finished with a game-high 23 with teammates Mallee Vela and Emma Martinez each scoring 10.
Randall improves to 9-6 overall and 1-0 in district action. The Rangerettes slip to 6-9 overall and 0-1.
Amarillo High rolls past Caprock
Coming off a strong weekend where Amarillo High won the Clay Cooley Invitational in Mesquite, the Lady Sands carried those winnings ways back into District 3-5A action knocking off crosstown rival Caprock 86-19 during a District 3-5A clash on Tuesday night.
The Lady Sandies stay hot moving to 15-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league play. Caprock drops to 4-11 overall and 0-4.
Clay Cooley Invitational MVP Ca’Nia Mitchell had another strong performance against the Lady Longhorns posting a game-high 21 points for the Lady Sandies. Teammates Bella Edwards and Tyler Helm both chipped in 11 points.
Tuesday’s top performers
- Palo Duro’s Zeinab Deng and Braya Smith scored all but six of the Lady Dons points which was enough for a 36-35 Palo Duro victory against Lubbock Coronado. Deng finished the game with a team-high 16 while Smith added 14. The Lady Dons (8-8 overall) pick up their first win of District 3-5A play improving to 1-2.
- Groom’s Taylor Ritter had a monster night torching Hedley for 34 points as the Lady Tigers cruised to a 60-26 victory.
- McLean’s prolific scorer Kasidy Russell didn’t disappoint Tuesday scoring a game-high 29 points in a 49-44 win over Claude.
- Nazareth’s Kambri Cleavinger led a big offensive night for Nazareth scoring a game-high 27 points during a 103-23 win over Springlake-Earth.
- Piper Patterson poured in 14 points that helped lift West Plains to a 58-31 win over Borger in the District 4-4A opener Tuesday.
- Marlee Maupin and Kinley Callaway combined for 20 points during Gruver’s District 1-2A opening victory over West Texas High 52-25. Maupin and Callaway each had 10 a piece.
- Stratford placed four players in double-digits as the Lady Elks stay hot beating Sunray 58-21 during Tuesday’s league opener. Lynley Albert led Stratford with 14 points followed by Addison Bell adding 12 with Kaydence Hood and Madison Braden chipping in 11.
- Fresh out of volleyball, Jaz Martinez is showing her skill in hoops scoring a team-high 17 points in Vega’s 45-43 win against Sanford-Fritch in the District 1-2A opener.
- Kress pulled off a huge 31-24 win against Happy to open District 4-1A play Tuesday. Jaikykie Baker helped the Lady Kangaroos cause scoring a team-high 10 points.
- Sophomore point guard Addi Jernigan dropped in 16 as the Lady Irish defeated Lefors 49-35.
