During last week’s bi-district and area round wins over Wellman-Union and Marfa, the versatile Van Wyk did everything she could to help the Lady Mustangs advance.

Against Wellman-Union, Van Wyk collected 22 assists with 17 kills for a double-double. Following that effort, Van Wyk then was sensational against Marfa with another double-double posting 17 assists with 12 kills.

Coach Skyler Cleavinger: “I think we are peaking at right time as a team and doing what we need to do. We had a hard preseason schedule, and I set it up that way for the experience. I love how Sonnell is playing and the role she plays on this team. She is a scorer, and she always knows where the ball needs to go. Sonnell knows the game and has a winning mentality with the skills to back it up.”

Van Wyk: “I’m so proud of how we’re playing right now. We have great chemistry and are giving the most effort working together. My mindset is completely different this year. I’m playing a lot stronger and I’m doing my best to be a leader to give it everything I have.”
