Armando Lujan, Sunray, QB-DB, Sr.
Sunray’s captain and signal caller of the offense had one of his best performances on the biggest stage to date this season for the Bobcats during a huge 59-41 win at home in front of an electric crowd on Friday night. Lujan was dynamic in every phase starting through the air going 29-of-39 for 409 yards with five passing touchdowns.
He tacked on two rushing touchdowns on 71 yards rushing and had a 78-yard pick six for a score to total eight touchdowns on the night. Like his character off the field, Lujan quietly became the state’s new record holder for touchdowns in a career surpassing Aledo’s Jonathan Gray (205) with 208.
Dawson Bennett & Kagan Davis, Sunray, WR
Complimenting Lujan was two of his favorite targets in Kagan Davis and Dawson Bennett. The speedy, shifty wide outs had their best games of the year at the right time against Panhandle totaling 21 catches for 330 yards with five touchdowns. Davis hauled in eight catches for a team-high 176 yards with three scores while Bennett made a game-high 13 catches for 154 yards with a pair of TDs.
Jett Lopez, Amarillo High, QB, Jr.
The junior dual-threat QB helped inch the Amarillo High Sandies closer to a playoff berth thanks to a blowout 54-14 win at home against Lubbock Coronado on Thursday. Lopez kept the AHS offense explosive like it has been all year completing 16-of-26 passes for 294 yards with four touchdowns. The junior then showed his speed to post 92 yards rushing on only four carries with two more TDs.
JP Carbajal, Spearman, RB, Sr.
Spearman’s bruising fullback was called upon time and time again during a 53-12 win over Highland Park. Head coach Brandon Reagan went to Carbajal 37 times and the senior answered the challenge chewing up the Hornets defense for 350 yards on the ground to go with six touchdowns while adding a two-point conversion.
Raymond Johnson IV, Palo Duro, RB, Soph.
Palo Duro snapped a three-game losing streak and kept their playoff hopes intact with a massive 38-31 road win at Plainview on Friday. Johnson IV was a key cog in that victory for the Dons as the Bulldog defense didn’t have an answer letting Johnson pile up 153 yards on only 11 totes with a pair of touchdowns.
Brody Tupin, West Plains, LB, Sr.
The three-year starter and West Plains captain anchored a defense that stifled Randall to its lowest offensive performance of the year during an eye-opening 43-21 Wolves’ victory on Friday. Tupin was a menace for the Randall offense totaling 12 tackles, eight of those solo, an interception and returned an onside kick for a touchdown.
Juan De La Cruz, Caprock, QB, Jr.
It was a big night for the Caprock Longhorns as head coach Rowdy Freeman earned his first district win in two years during a 52-22 drubbing of Lubbock High at home on Friday. De La Cruz made sure to do everything he could to help get the W by throwing for 163 yards with three touchdowns. He also took a chunk from the ground going for 69 yards rushing with another score.
Ethan Gonzalez, Hereford, WR, Sr.
The talented Hereford receiver has been showing his great hands all season and that didn’t change in a key 38-29 win for the Whitefaces against Dumas at home. Gonzales was the go-to target for quarterback Kalub Ramirez snagging five catches for 129 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
Chase Lantelme, Stratford, QB-DB, Soph.
It doesn’t matter what role he’s thrusted into, Lantelme always takes it head on and rises to the challenge. Playing mostly quarterback in a 63-0 blanking of Bovina, Lantelme went 10-of-16 for 165 yards with three touchdowns. At the safety position, Lantelme continues to be a ballhawk making his seventh pick of the year that resulted in a 65-yard return for a score.
Kelby Sherwood, West Texas High, RB, Jr.
Behind quarterback Cayde Winters it’s easy to get overshadowed, but Sherwood is having a tremendous year and proves it by the week. During the Comanches 68-0 win against Sanford-Fritch, Sherwood toted the rock 14 times for 146 yards with two scores.
