Canyon boys cross country team leaves competition in dust for fourth straight regional championship
The Canyon Eagles brought home another Region I-4A championship and did it in dominant fashion at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock on Monday morning.
Canyon placed seven runners in the top 10 to claim the fourth straight UIL Region I-4A cross country championship with a total of 17 points which was 78 points better than Dumas (95) that finished in second place overall.
The Eagles will now head back to Round Rock looking to win a third straight UIL state championship.
“This team trained hard all summer and this season to get where they are,” Canyon cross country coach Wes Kirton said. “They have shown true commitment, and the hard work is paying off. We have a great team with a lot of depth and that showed here at regional. It’s amazing to see what these guys can do when they all work together.”
The Eagles then saw Aaryan Katwal-Shaver take fifth (16:24.2), teammate Jamison Kirton place sixth (16:25.1), Dayson Smith was in seventh (16:26.4) and Grady Simmons finished eighth (16:31.1).
Joining the Eagles in Round Rock is Dumas and West Plains. The Demons took second place overall with 95 points. Neil Moreno paced Dumas in 14th place with a time of 16:50.1.
The Wolves earned the fourth and final spot to qualify for state tallying 156 points. Noah Holland was the highlight for West Plains coming in 20th place (16:55.1).
The UIL Class 4A boys state meet is set for Friday, Nov. 1, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Canyon Lady Eagles win Texas Panhandle packed regional
Just like the district meet, the Canyon Lady Eagles had to hold off Randall and Dumas to win the Region I-4A championship on Monday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
The Eagles were able to hold off rival Randall by three points in an exciting race scoring 40 points to the Lady Raiders 43 points. Dumas was third overall with 107.
Following Bristow was Crickette Morris in seventh place (11:57.1), Avery Brown in eighth (12:02.3) and Michaela Sharber in ninth (12:15).
Dumas punched a ticket to Round Rock with 107 points and a third-place team finish. Leading the Demonettes was Emily Gross who placed fourth overall (11:40.3).
The UIL Class 4A girls state meet is set for Friday, Nov. 1, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Region I-2A
Gruver Lady Hounds win team crown, Farwell’s Jaime wins individual title
The Gruver Lady Hounds held off a strong challenge from rival Farwell to win the Region I-2A championship Monday morning at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
Gruver totaled 76 points to beat Farwell (79) by only three points.
Hallie McLain was the catalyst for the Lady Hounds placing fourth overall taking home a time of 12:34.6. Teammates Reese Grotegut (13:12.3), Carter Holloway (13:15.7) and Jordan Schenk (13:18.4) all had top 20 finishes.
Qualifying for state as individuals were Wellington’s Taytum Kane, who was seventh overall (12:45.5), Panhandle’s Avery Cathey (13:03.5) and Clarendon’s Madi Benson (13:13.5).
The UIL Class 2A girls state meet is set for Friday, Nov. 1, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Sunray boys sneak into the UIL state meet
Sunray is headed to Round Rock after grabbing the fourth and final team spot at the Region I-2A meet Monday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
The Bobcats took fourth with a team total of 136 points. Plains was the 1-2A champions with 37 points.
The Bobcats Justin Bain finished in the top 10 taking ninth overall with a time of 17:24.5. Teammate Ivan De La Rosa placed in the top 20 (17:45.7).
Qualifying as individuals from the Amarillo-area was Gruver’s Gustavo Quintana (17:39.9) and Spearman’s Jonathan Hernandez (17:59.1).
