WTAMU volleyball defends home court with pair of Lone Star Conference wins

The No. 9-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs did what they do best and that’s defend their home court with a pair of Lone Star Conference wins against Angelo State and Lubbock Christian on Friday and Saturday night at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.

The Lady Buffs gained a measure of revenge in a sweep of No. 14 ASU with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 sweep to open the homestand on Friday. The Lady Buffs lost to the Rambelles two weeks ago at the LSC Crossover showcase.

WTAMU then completed the weekend by getting another sweep this time of LCU, 25-17, 25-23, 26-24, on Saturday.

The Lady Buffs (11-3 overall) are hot winners of five straight and have stayed perfect through the early portion of the conference schedule at 4-0.

WTAMU will be back on the road continuing LSC play taking on Oklahoma Christian University on Wednesday followed by a matchup at Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

Friday’s game 

WTAMU looked much sharper this time around during the home sweep of the Rambelles (13-2, 3-1 LSC).

The Lady Buffs finished the night with 45 kills on 95 swings with 14 errors for an attack percentage of .326 to go along with 41 assists, two aces, 34 digs and seven blocks.

The Belles had 38 kills on 104 attempts with 18 attack errors to hit .192 as a team with 36 assists, no aces, 30 digs and five blocks in the loss.

Emma Becker and Kaycee Cavanaugh finished the night with 10 kills each for the Lady Buffs as Becker had just one attack error to hit .562 while Cavanaugh registered her fifth double-double with 11 digs.

Ainsley Malis paced the WT offense with 24 assists to go along with five digs while Canyon graduate Bryli Contreras had eight digs in the back row.

Friday night was the 94th all-time meeting between the Belles and Lady Buffs as WT holds a 65-29 lead in the series that dates back to 1980. ASU has dropped their last five trips in Canyon.

Saturday’s game 

Amarillo High graduate and Texas Tech transfer Currie Marusak closed out the weekend on a high note leading the Lady Buffs with 15 kills in a sweep of the Lady Chaps (6-8, 2-2 LSC).

The Lady Buffs totaled 45 kills on 112 swings with 17 attack errors as they hit .250 as a team with 39 assists, five aces, 43 digs and 11 blocks.

Marusak finished the afternoon with a season-high 15 kills on 25 swings with just two errors for an attack percentage of .520 to go along with three digs and a block.

Hereford graduate and two-time All-American Taytum Stow had a big afternoon as the registering 12 kills on 19 attempts with two errors to hit .526 with two digs and eight blocks. Ainsley Malis handed out 22 assists to go along with eight digs and Contreras led the way in the back row with 11 digs.

This was the 44th all-time meeting on the court between the Lady Buffs and LCU, WT is 35-8-1 in the series that dates back to 1980, the Lady Chaps have dropped their last 10 matches in Canyon.
