West Plains hands rival Canyon first 4-4A loss
The West Plains Lady Wolves shook things up in District 4-4A thanks to a massive road by handing Canyon its first loss in league play with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-11, four-set victory on Saturday at the Joe Lombard Gymnasium.
With the win, West Plains (21-11 overall) pulls into a three-way tie atop the District 4-4A standings with Canyon (19-11) and Randall (21-12) with all three teams sitting at 6-1 in district.
“This was a great team win for us,” West Plains head coach Katilyn Cornelius said. “We have been talking a lot all season about putting all of the pieces together, and utilizing all of our talents and the girls did just that. I am proud of the way we prepared this week, stuck to our game plan, and finished in tough moments. We played some really scrappy defense, and were able to convert that to kills when it counted.”
“Canyon is an extremely talented team,” Cornelius said. “This is great to build some confidence and gain some momentum going into the second half of district. I’m also proud of the way my seniors stepped up today. We were able to count on them in big moments.”
Piper Patterson, Kynzie Ward and Adyson Simmons all tallied 10 kills apiece. Cecilia Murillo carried the offense with 21 assists and added four aces. AJ Norman and Mya Bartlett led a strong defensive effort. Norman registered 20 digs on the back row with Bartlett adding 18.
Canyon’s Alainna Bellino went for 22 assists and three aces. Brooklyn Kinsey and Cali McKinley each knocked down 10 kills.
Randall knocks off Hereford
Randall capped off a strong week with a big home victory against Hereford, 25-21, 25-15, 27-25, at the Leslie Broadhurst Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Randall (21-12 overall) moves to 6-1 and into a first-place tie with West Plains and Canyon in District 4-4A. The Lady Whitefaces (21-15) fall to 4-3 in the league.
Kambree Gonzales was extremely efficient on defense for the Lady Raiders with a game-high 36 digs. Senior standout Sidney Soria paced the offense with 41 assists and Brooke Henderson powered home a team-high 15 kills with seven digs.
Hereford’s London Baker put together a triple-double with 11 kills, 11 digs and 10 assists.
Dumas downs Pampa
In a game both teams needed to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot, it was the Dumas Demonettes putting together a strong effort in a 25-18, 25-16, 25-27, 25-20, home win against Pampa on Saturday.
Rylee Schacher is having a great season and that carried on against the Lady Harvesters as Schacher led Dumas with 16 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Schacher also had 6.5 blocks at the net. Sophie Clements was stellar getting the ball to her hitters finishing with 48 assists.
Despite the loss, Pampa’s Maecie Hawthorne racked up her eye-popping fourth triple-double on the year thanks to 15 assists, 13 digs and 11 kills.
The Demonettes (18-18) are now 3-4 in district. Pampa (16-14) drops to 2-5.
Borger gets first district win beating Perryton
In a matchup of two teams looking for their first District 4-4A win, the Borger Lady Bulldogs proved too much for the Perryton Rangerettes in a 25-21, 25-18, 25-16 sweep on Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs get their first league win improving to 1-6 while moving to 11-17 overall. Perryton falls to 0-7 in district and 6-22 overall.
Borger’s Emilee Bridges had an all-around effort with 17 assists, seven digs, three kills and three aces. Her sister, Adyson, followed with eight kills and four blocks.
District 3-5A
Amarillo High cruises past Coronado
Amarillo High made quick work of Lubbock Coronado while staying unbeaten in District 3-5A with a convincing 25-9, 25-18, 27-25, victory on the road Saturday.
The Lady Sandies offense clicked behind the play of Payton Cash and Bennett Rea who combined for 39 assists. Cash tallied a team-high 22 assists with Rea dishing out 17.
Sienna Cavalier hit the floor for 17 digs and knocked down 14 kills for a double-double and Ella Head played great on the back row with 14 digs.
AHS (29-6) is all alone in first place of District 3-5A at 10-0. Coronado (19-16) is now 6-4 in district.
Tascosa takes season series from Caprock
The Tascosa Lady Rebels made it a season sweep of crosstown rival Caprock thanks in part to a three-set sweep, 25-14, 25-21, 29-27.
The Lady Rebels saw an excellent defensive effort from Kassidy Langeland, Gabbie Mason and Bennet Berryman as the trio combined for 46 digs. Langeland and Mason each had 16 digs with Berryman adding 14.
Libby Miller led the team with 19 assists and Molly Culp registered 10 kills.
Caprock’s Marlene Ramirez did have a double-double with 14 assists and 10 digs.
Tascosa (27-8) stays a game behind Amarillo High for first place at 9-1. The Lady Longhorns fall to 4-6 in the league and 16-14 overall.
In two other District 3-5A matchups, Lubbock-Cooper swept Palo Duro 25-8, 25-11, 25-14, and Lubbock Monterey downed Plainview 25-17, 25-18, 25-17.
District 1-3A
Bushland downs Dalhart, River Road wins
It was another day at the office for the Bushland Lady Falcons during a 25-11, 25-20, 25-9, sweep at Dalhart on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Falcons (33-4 overall) run their unbelievable district win streak to 91 straight matches and are now 2-0 in 1-3A. The Lady Wolves (20-7-1) suffer their first district loss falling to 2-1.
Bella Babbit paced Bushland with 12 kills. Teammate LillyAnn Shannon powered down 10 kills and Avery Ramos finished with 23 digs.
In the other district matchup Saturday, River Road picked up its first league win handling Dimmitt 25-17, 25-5, 25-14. Reese DeHart put together a solid outing dishing out 25 assists with four aces. Hailey Mayes chipped in seven kills.
The Lady Wildcats (20-10) are now 1-1 in district. The Bobbies (3-26) struggles continue moving to 0-3 in the league.
District 1-1A
Fort Elliott, Shamrock, Miami win
Through the early portion of the league schedule, the Fort Elliott Lady Cougars look like the team to beat.
Fort Elliott picked up a big four-set home win against Wildorado on Saturday, 25-17, 19-25, 26-24, 25-16.
The Lady Cougars stay in complete control of first place of District 1-1A at 4-0 and move to 12-6 overall. The Lady Mustangs (5-13) are now 2-2 in district action.
Miami had no problems getting past Darrouzett 25-7, 25-17, 25-13, on Saturday. The Lady Warriors (11-13) are 2-2 in district. The Lady Longhorns (2-4) are still seeking their first win in the league falling to 0-4.
Shamrock stepped up and took down Kelton on Saturday in four sets, 29-27, 13-25, 26-24, 25-20. The sister combo of Maddyson and Aspen McAllister led the way for the Lady Irish. Aspen tallied a double-double with 17 digs and 16 kills. Maddyson showed her worth on the back row with 23 digs.
The Lady Irish (13-10) push their district record to 2-2. Kelton (7-6) is also 2-2 in district.
TAPPS District 1-2A
San Jacinto Christian, Ascension Academy get W’s
The San Jacinto Christian Lady Patriots made a long road trip well worth in a three-set sweep of Holy Cross Midland, 25-11, 25-12, 25-11, on Friday.
The Lady Patriots (28-4) stay a game back of All Saints Episcopal in the district at 7-1. Alayna Daniels was strong at the net with 15 kills. Harlie Brabham made the offense work with 17 assists and Mia Whitney had eight digs.
Ascension Academy not only picked up its first win on the season, but the Lady Cardinals also earned their first district win beating Christ The King, 25-15, 25-17, 16-25, 25-18, on Friday. Ascension Academy improves its record to 1-9 overall and 1-7 in district.
Holy Cross Catholic Academy fell to All Saints Episcopal 25-7, 25-7, 25-9.
