Gruver works over West Texas High
Gruver is proving to be a team to keep an eye on in 2024 with another outstanding performance to stay unbeaten on the season.
The Greyhounds offense lit up the scoreboard at home on Friday grounding an upstart West Texas High team 56-24 on Friday night.
The Greyhounds are now 3-0 overall on the season while WT High falls to 2-1.
The Comanches didn’t have an answer for Greyhound quarterback Briggs Satterfield. The junior dual-threat torched WT High going 11-of-17 through the air for 327 yards with five touchdown tosses. He chipped in 35 rushing yards on the night with another score.
Satterfield’s favorite target became Nick Shepard who caught three passes for 188 yards with two scores.
Running back Walker Maupin had his second straight big week. Maupin toted the rock 15 times for 168 yards with a touchdown. On top of 68 yards receiving, Stephen Cowan played a great defensive game for Gruver racking up 13 tackles, four of those solo. Victor Flores led the team with 15 tackles, five of which were solo.
Highland Park rolls Clarendon
For a second week in a row the Highland Park Hornets find themselves in the win column.
The Hornets went on the road on Friday and came away with a convincing 27-6 win against Clarendon at Broncos Stadium.
Highland Park (2-1) was excellent on both sides of the ball totaling 450 yards of offense and limited the Broncos (0-3) to 126 total yards.
Quarterback Josh Marler have a great night for the Hornets going 16-of-26 for 298 yards passing with four touchdowns. Izzy Arana snagged three catches for 117 yards with two touchdowns. Running back Tom Phan racked up 144 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Panhandle stays hot downing Dalhart
Through the first three weeks of the season Panhandle has been catching more and more attention and that didn’t stop during a lopsided 43-21 home win against Dalhart on Friday night.
The Golden Wolves, playing without starting quarterback Kyler Read, who suffered a leg injury last week, fall to 2-1 on the year.
The Panthers (3-0) had another big night from Broxton Robinson going 10-of-17 176 yard and a score. Robinson also toted the rock 26 times for 90 yards with three touchdowns.
Offensive lineman Gavin Brookshire graded out at 100 percent with three pancakes.
Week 3 quick hits
- Memphis snapped a 13-game losing skid dating back to 2022 with a huge 19-14 road victory at Ralls on Friday night. Jonathan Henderson Jr. had two touchdown catches for the Cyclones.
- Shamrock won a tough contest at Vega 14-12 on Friday night. Phillip Cook was 12-of-18 for 173 yards passing with two touchdowns. Cook also ran for 79 yards. Despite the loss, Vega’s Karter Goldsmith had 23.5 tackles.
- Bovina nabbed a hard-fought 24-16 win against Dimmitt behind a superb effort from a Mustang defense that had six interceptions. Luis Avila helped Bovina (1-2) getting a clutch 48-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
- Farwell is in the win column for the first time this season after beating Sundown 43-14. Ryder McElroy had himself a night rushing for 137 yards on only three carries with a pair of touchdowns. McElroy also caught five passes for 69 yards for a score and had six tackles on defense with a fumble recovery.
- Spearman hung tough till the end but came up short 28-21 to a very good Hooker, Okla., team on Friday night. Despite the loss, Lynx running back JP Carbajal carried the running game with 102 yards on 28 carries and a score.
- Hale Center doubled up Wheeler 28-14 handing the Mustangs (2-1) their first loss on the year. Julius Atherton did his part piling up 154 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown for Wheeler (2-1).
