Jaz Martinez, Vega volleyball, Sr.

On the court: Vega has made major strides entering its fourth year as a volleyball program and Martinez has been the glue that’s brought that all together. The four-year varsity player and now senior leader is off to a tremendous start for a Vega team that went from one-win just four years ago to already getting 20 wins so far in 2024.

In a pair of wins last week against Amarillo PCHEA and Olton, Martinez tallied two double-double performances. Against PCHEA, the versatile senior racked up 13 digs with 12 kills. Against Olton, Martinez posted 23 digs with 16 kills.

On the season, Martinez has 224 kills to go with 213 digs and 22 aces totaling 17 an eye-opening 17 double-doubles on the year.

Coach Berklee Norris: “When we started this program we didn’t have any true volleyball players. It’s been tremendous to watch it grow and see these players grow every single day since. Jaz is one of those that has come a long way and I’m so proud of her. She is so athletic and can jump out of the gym. What I love about Jaz the most is she is never satisfied and is always wanting to get better. She’s a fantastic leader and someone people want to follow.”

Martinez: “I feel like we have made a lot of progress in four years. When we started this program four years ago, I was a freshman. We had one win that year. We have just continued to make major strides. I love this team because we have all worked to give it everything we have in practice and we’re all so competitive. For myself, it’s been a huge leap from my freshman year to now. I never played volleyball before my freshman year. Now, I play club volleyball as well as high school and It has just made me a lot better.”
