On the mat: Chavez put on quite the display that resulted in the junior taking home the 235-pound championship at the 23rd Caprock Lady Longhorn Classic last Saturday. Chavez ran through the competition winning all seven matches by pinfall including a 32-second pin of Lubbock-Cooper’s Kayla McLearen to win the outright title.

Chavez, who placed third at the UIL state wrestling meet a year ago, is off to a great start this year with over 20 wins while earning individual championships at the Randall Ruckus and the Lubbock Estacado Meet.

Coach Joseph Radke: “Ariana started out the season a little slow, but she’s really turned the corner. Ariana is always on the mat doing her work and conditioning. She just competes at a different level. Over the summer, she went to the Fargo Nationals and took sixth place. That really built her confidence. She is just a determined young person with an unbelievable work ethic. That Caprock tournament is a grind and she showed just how good she is.”

Chavez: “I feel like this season is going really well. It’s been fun and winning the Caprock Classic was a big accomplishment. I’ve been practicing and putting in the work to get better and correct my mistakes. I just want to keep getting better and see how far I can go and hopefully get another trip to state.”
