Clarendon crushes Shamrock
The Clarendon Broncos stayed perfect in District 2-2A Division II by crushing Shamrock 58-6 at home on Friday night.
After an 0-3 start to the year, the Broncos have found their footing putting together six straight wins. Clarendon (6-3 overall) has also put itself in contention for a district championship facing a showdown at Wellington (7-2, 4-0) next week.
Do-it-all standout Lyric Smith was the story making his final home game a memorable one on Senior Night. Smith was a complete mismatch for the Irish defense in every way. Through the air, Smith 7-of-15 passing for 223 yards with a pair of TDs, but on the ground, Smith knifed his way through Shamrock for 90 yards on only eight carries with two more scores.
On the night, Smith totaled 313 total yards with four touchdowns on offense.
The Clarendon defense got after Shamrock forcing six interceptions of quarterback Phillip Cook. Those six interceptions ties Boys Ranch for the Class 2A record from earlier this season. Smith and Sims each had two picks with Grant Haynes and Anthony Ceniceros coming down with the other two.
Shamrock (4-5 overall) falls to 1-3 in the league and will need to beat Memphis next week to earn the fourth and final playoff spot.
Wellington’s shutout streak continues
Wellington continues its dominant defensive ways as the Skyrockets pitched their fourth straight District 2-2A Division II shutout this time of Quanah 42-0 on Friday.
The Skyrockets (7-2) move to a perfect 4-0 in district and have outscored their opponents 188-0 during this streak.
Wellington will host Clarendon (6-3, 4-0) for the outright league championship next week.
Wellington totaled 468 yards of offense while limiting the Indians (1-8, 1-3) to 52 yards and just seven passing. Quarterback Carson Tarver finished the game 5-of-8 for 127 yards with two touchdown passes and tacked on 55 yards rushing with two more scores. Travon Lewis registered a game-high 142 yards rushing on 18 totes with a TD.
Wheeler is playoff bound
The Wheeler Mustangs blasted Memphis 31-0 on Thursday night to earn themselves a Class 2A Division II playoff spot.
The Mustangs move to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in District 2-2A Division II. Memphis remains winless at 0-8, 0-4.
Quarterback Creed Newkirk had an excellent outing for Wheeler using both his arm and his feet. The sophomore went 6-of-10 passing for 90 yards with two scores, and then went for 81 yards on seven carries. Julius Atherton tacked on 69 yards rushing on seven carries and Marshall Mcneil and Elpidio Navarrette each caught TD passes.
District 3-2A Division II
District 3-2A Division II got very interesting after an eventful Friday night.
Hale Center pulled the upset of Lockney 27-21. That puts the Longhorns (6-3) in a three-way tie for first place with Sudan (6-3) and Ralls (7-2) at 3-1 in the league.
Sudan beat Bovina 40-18 on Friday night. That drops the Mustangs to 2-7, 1-3 and Ralls pummeled Crosbyton 50-26.
District 1-2A Division I
Stratford, Panhandle and Farwell all win big
The top half of District 1-2A Division I flexed their muscles on Friday night in a massive way.
Stratford, Panhandle and Farwell all dominated Highland Park, Sanford-Fritch and West Texas High by an eye-popping combined score of 185-6.
The Elks (9-0, 4-0) remained undefeated and clinched a share of the District 1-2A Division I title with a 55-6 dismantling of Highland Park. Panhandle (8-1, 3-1) steam rolled Sanford-Frich 74-0, and Farwell (7-2, 3-1) blanked WT High 56-0.
Panhandle and Farwell will square off next week in Farwell with the winner earning outright second place in the district.
In the victory over the Hornets, Stratford quarterback Bryce Braden was 7-of-9 for 159 yards with two passing TDs. Braden also rushed for 76 yards with two more scores. Teammate Israel Licon added five carries for 86 rushing yards with two touchdowns and made 12 tackles on defense, two sacks and blocked a punt.
Panhandle quarterback Broxton Robinson threw for 318 yards with three touchdowns against Fritch and tacked on two more rushing TDs on 57 yards.
Ryder McElroy of Farwell was outstanding against the Comanches snagging three passes for 148 yards with two touchdowns including an 82-yard score. McElroy also led the team with six tackles, two of which were for a loss.
