Canyon opens 3-4A D-I with decisive win over Herd

There wasn’t much rust apparent for the Canyon Eagles when they finally opened their District 3-4A Division I season at Hereford on Friday night.

After drawing the open date during the first week of district play a week earlier, Canyon just picked up where it left off against Hereford. The Eagles used a prolific ground attack to offset Hereford’s dynamic passing game in rolling to a 30-13 victory.

Canyon (6-1, 1-0 in district) used a fairly basic offensive game plan against Hereford (6-2, 1-1), throwing the ball only nine times while running for 302 yards. The Eagles had four ballcarriers go for over 50 yards.

“I don’t know if it was how we scripted it,” Canyon coach Todd Winfrey said. “I still don’t think we played great. We had three turnovers. We stopped (Hereford’s) running game and ran the ball really well. We got really physical with them up front.”

The challenge for any team playing the Whitefaces is containing their offense, with a prolific passing game led by Kalub Ramirez and running back Brylyn Lopez leading the running attack. Ramirez threw two touchdown passes but had only 120 yards passing.

Just as telling, Lopez ran for only 26 yards.

“A team which is that good you’re never going to shut down, and we bent but we didn’t break,” Winfrey said. “We’re super pleased. All those non-district games are just to get ready. We’re 1-0 but that’s just one game.”

Christian McGuire ran for two touchdowns for Canyon. Sam Johnson led the Eagles with 83 yards rushing while Ryan Rivera was close behind with 82.

Randall crushes Pampa

After squeaking past Dumas to open 3-4A D-I play last week, Randall left little doubt against Pampa, dominating on both sides of the ball to roll to a 49-7 victory at Happy State Bank Stadium to claim sole possession of the early district lead.

Randall (5-3, 2-0) used a balanced offense and held Pampa (2-6, 0-2) t0 219 yards of total offense. Pampa scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but after that was held scoreless by the Raiders.

Meanwhile, Randall racked up 480 yards of offense. Dylan Ray ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Quarterback Tryston Sanchez threw for 164 yards and a touchdown and ran for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Just as important was Randall’s performance defensively, as the Raiders forced five turnovers.

District 2-4A Division II

West Plains destroys Levelland

Like fellow Canyon ISD school Randall, West Plains has also taken sole possession of the district lead in commanding fashion, as the Wolves jumped all over Levelland on the road for a 68-13 victory and their seventh straight win.

West Plains (7-1, 2-0) seemed to be able to do whatever it pleased offensively against Levelland (2-6, 0-2), piling up 478 yards offensively.

As usual, the Wolves were balanced. Quarterback Reid Macon was again remarkably efficient, completing 14-of-15 passes for 145 yards and four touchdowns. Jordi Hernandez again led the running game with 102 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Seminole shuts out Borger

Borger got a rude awakening to open district play after drawing the open week to start play last week, as Seminole rolled to a 41-0 victory at home. The Bulldogs fell to 3-4 and 0-1 in district, while Seminole is now 7-1 and 1-1.
