Tascosa picks up first district win
With things looking their bleakest, the Tascosa Rebels woke up in time to get back in the district race Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.
In a clash between teams looking for their first district win, Tascosa fell behind Lubbock Monterey by two touchdowns to start the game. But the Rebels roared back with 33 unanswered points and went on to win 33-21 to finally notch a district victory.
Monterey went up 14-0 in the first quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by JaMarcus Smith, who finished with a game-high 134 yards on 15 carries. After that, though, it was all Tascosa (2-4, 1-2 in district).
Coltyn Fulton accounted for four of Tascosa’s five touchdowns, throwing for two and running for two. Fulton’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Taurean Johnson with 52 seconds left in the first half gave the Rebels the lead for good at 20-14.
Monterey fell to 2-4 and 0-2.
Cooper routs Amarillo High
Amarillo High’s unbeaten district start went by the boards on the road, as Lubbock-Cooper got off to a fast start and the Sandies never recovered in suffering their first district loss, 49-19.
Cooper took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter thanks in part to a couple of big plays. Amarillo High (3-4, 2-1) had a tough time stopping Cooper’s balanced offense, as the Pirates (4-2, 2-0 gouged the Sandies for 488 total yards.
The Sandies appeared is if they could make a game of it as J.Q. Ervin scored on an 80-yard run early in the second quarter to cut it to 21-7, but they got no closer. Rylan Leathers had big receiving game in defeat with seven catches for 119 yards and a touchdown.
Cooper’s Jayden Hibbler and Jackson Austin both ran for two touchdowns and Austin also caught one. Ryan Rodriguez threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
In the other district game involving an Amarillo ISD school, Caprock lost to Abilene High 55-0 to fall to 1-6 and 0-3.

Division II
Palo Duro routs Lubbock High
Palo Duro got off on the right foot to start district play, opening the game with 34 unanswered points and cruising the rest of the way to roll past Lubbock High 58-24 on the road.
Darien Lewis and Keima’j Barnes both ran for two touchdowns as Palo Duro (3-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 34-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Amariyea James actually had the biggest game running the ball for the Dons with 165 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Barnes had 126 yards on 15 carries as PD racked up 356 yards rushing.
Lewis had a solid dual-threat game for the Dons at quarterback, as he completed 14- of-24 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
Lubbock’s Dallas Trevino threw two touchdown passes, but the Westerners (2-4, 0-1) couldn’t run the ball against the Dons, who gave up only 46 yards rushing.
In the other District 2-5A Division II matchups, Abilene Wylie edged Plainview, 36-34, and Wichita Falls Rider doubled up Abilene Cooper 42-21.
