Canadian stays undefeated with rout of Childress
Week by week, it seems the No. 2-ranked Canadian Wildcat are only getting better and seem to be a level above any opponent that they come across.
The Wildcats (6-0, 1-0) once again looked dominant this time against arch-rival Childress in a 63-21 drubbing in the District 3-3A Division II opener on Friday night at Wildcats Stadium.
“We felt like we had a physical hard-fought game with Childress like it always is,” Canadian head coach Andy Cavalier said. “We were efficient on the offense side and played great defense. It was a total team effort.”
Like they’ve done all year, Canadian jumped out to a fast start scoring 14 points in the first three minutes behind a 57-yard scamper from Luke Flowers just over a minute into the contest, followed by a 33-yard strike from quarterback Camren Cavalier to Preston Neumeier not two minutes later.
That set the tone for the rest of the game as Canadian built a 28-7 halftime lead and ran away for the 42-point victory.
The Canadian offense was masterful piling up 606 yards behind a balanced attack. The Wildcats rushed it for 332 yards and passed for 274 more yards.
Neumeier was unstoppable and a mismatch for the Bobcat (3-3, 0-1) secondary hauling in a game-high 14 catches for 185 yards with that touchdown. Flowers showed the dangerous weapon he is with his versatility rushing it only three times for 80 yards with a score and catching seven passes for 75 yards for two more TDs.
“We try to be looking at ourselves as a team,” Cavalier said. “Every player does a great job of that and that’s what we love. But that’s certainly a milestone. Camren is a huge part of our off production and has been for the past three years. His playmaking ability is certainly special and a big part of what we do.”
Friona thumps Tulia despite overcoming impossible situation
After a very difficult week, especially a tough Friday, the Friona Chieftains overcame adversity and came together for a 55-8 win at Tulia in a District 3-3A Division II win on Friday night.
On Friday morning, veteran head coach Jimmy Arias was asked to resign his position for undisclosed reasons after eight seasons. This left offensive coordinator Elias Carrillo to move into the interim head coaching role and assistant Tim Ashlock to slide into the interim athletic director position.
Despite everything going on, the players stepped up and the Chieftains didn’t miss a beat as the players were able to celebrate by presenting Carrillo the game ball after earning his first win as a head coach after the victory.
The twin brother combination of Carson and Cade Seaman were very impressive for the Chieftains. Carson, the quarterback ran the ball 13 times for 159 yards with three touchdowns and went 5-of-10 passing for 84 yards for two more TDs. Cade, the do-it-all running back, added a rushing touchdown on 132 yards on 14 carries as teammate Aaron Rosales chipped in with 73 yards on nine carries with a score of his own.
After an 0-3 start to the year, Friona is now 3-3 overall and 1-0 in district. Tulia falls to 1-5 and 0-1.
Spearman dominates Dimmitt
Spearman opened up District 3-3A Division II play in a huge way by blowing out the Dimmitt Bobcats at home thanks to a 45-19 victory at Lynx Stadium on Friday night.
Spearman moves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in district while Dimmitt drops to 1-5 overall and 0-1.
The Lynx punished the Bobcats behind a devastating ground attack. Out of Spearman’s 352 yards, 335 of those came behind its bruising backfield.
The Bobcats actually took an early 6-0 lead when the talented Tony Salazar broke loose for a 40-yard score. From there, it was all Spearman as the Lynx 35 unanswered to break the game wide open.
JP Carbajal was the catalyst for Spearman’s rushing performance putting up 164 yards on 26 carries with four touchdowns, one of which was for 36 yards in the first quarter.
Teammate Hudson Swan complimented Carbajal with eight carries for 93 yards rushing with a score.
The Lynx defense limited to 245 yards.
Division I
Dalhart beats down River Road
It was the perfect start for upstart Dalhart Golden Wolves to open District 2-3A Division in a 42-8 dominating victory at River Road on Friday night.
The story was Dalhart junior quarterback Kyler Read. Like he does every week, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound, bulldozer did his thing by running over the Wildcat defense for 163 yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns. Read tacked on 115 passing yard on only 4-of-8 completions for another two scores to combined for five total TDs.
The Golden Wolves (5-1, 1-0) were too physical for River Road (1-6, 0-1) rushing for 271 yards as a team out of their 386 yards. The Golden Wolves defense also did its job holding the Wildcats to 43 yards rushing.
On top of Read’s performance, teammate Orbin Hernandez caught a 40-yard touchdown pass and finished with 78 yards receiving on two total snags.
