Panhandle lights up scoreboard in win over Highland Park

Panhandle broke open a close game with a huge second half to pull away from Highland Park for a wild 72-32 win in a District 1-2A Division I opener at Hornets Stadium on Friday night.

The Panthers and Hornets went back-and-forth with Panhandle holding a slight 29-25 lead at halftime. With the score 35-32 early in the third, the Panthers picked up some stops and the offense continued to sting the Hornets outscoring Highland Park 37-0 the rest of the way.

Panhandle stays unbeaten at 6-0 and moves to 1-0 in district. Highland Park falls to 4-2, 0-1.

Quarterback Broxton Robinson impressed in another outstanding performance as the Hornet defense simply didn’t have an answer. Through the air, Robinson was 12-of-16 for 202 yards with four touchdown tosses. On the ground, Robinson did the damage as well with an incredible 251 yards on 26 carries with three more scores. On the night, the sophomore finished with 453 yards of offense and seven combined TDs.

Teammate Landyn Durst benefited from Robinson’s big night by catching six passes for 115 yards bringing in two touchdowns.

Stratford’s Braden highlights win over Farwell 

Stratford quarterback Bryce Braden did Bryce Braden things that Farwell wasn’t able to overcome during the Elks 38-7 lopsided win at Steers Stadium on Friday night.

Braden did everything but serve hot dogs at halftime for Stratford. On the offensive side of the ball, Braden used his 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame to bulldoze the Farwell defense chewing up 118 yards on 18 carries with two scores including a 38-yard score. Braden had a very efficient night passing going 12-of-16 for 168 yards with three more touchdowns.

Stratford limited the Steers to 151 total yards with Braden leading the way with 20 tackles, two sacks and a quarterback hurry. The Elks also stifled Farwell’s talented running back Corey Stancell to 26 yards on 12 touches.

Julio Valdez did his part for Stratford rushing for 77 yards for a TD, and tacked on 95 yards receiving.

Stratford stays undefeated at 6-0 overall and moves to 1-0 in District 1-2A Division I. Farwell falls to 4-2, 0-1.

West Texas High knocks off Sanford-Fritch

West Texas High took total control for a 40-7 blow out of Hutchinson County rival Sanford-Fritch at home on Friday night.

The Comanches keep themselves in the playoff hunt improving to 1-0 in District 1-2A Division I while moving to 3-3 overall. Fritch is still looking for its first win falling to 0-6, 0-1.

WT High quarterback Keaton Fellers showed his dual-threat ability in the grounding of the Eagles. Fellers was strong in the passing game going 9-of-15 for 125 yards with a TD but was lights out on the ground rushing for 83 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns.

TJ Riggs was the main target for Fellers making only catches but for 98 yards including a 64-yard score.

Division II 

Smith leads Clarendon to shutout over Wheeler 

It was the Lyric Smith show for Clarendon as the Broncos blasted Wheeler in a 32-0 shutout during a District 2-2A Division II opener on Friday night at Broncos Stadium.

Smith, Clarendon’s Swiss Army Knife took advantage of every single opportunity of the ball in his hands. Playing quarterback for an injured Harrison Howard, Smith took to the air to throw for 140 yards on 13-of-25 completions with a pair of touchdowns. Smith then used his dangerous speed to gallop past the Mustangs for an eye-popping 241 yards on only 18 carries, averaging 13.3 yards per carry, for two more scores. On the night, Smith racked up 381 total yards with four total TDs.

Teammate Mason Sims chipped in with three catches for 49 yards, Colton Caudle had five snags for 49 yards with a touchdown and Qua Brown had 37 yards receiving with a TD.

Clarendon improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the league. Wheeler falls to 1-5, 0-1.

Wellington puts up the points on Shamrock 

The Wellington Skyrockets opened up District 2-2A Division II play in fine fashion thanks to a 64-0 blanking of Shamrock at El Paso Field in Shamrock on Friday.

The Skyrockets are now 4-2 overall and 1-0 in district. Shamrock drops to 3-3, 0-1.

Wellington had complete control in every phase of this football clash. The Skyrockets totaled 508 yards of offense to the Irish’s 33 yards. The Skyrockets ground game ran right past Shamrock for 372 yards with Travion Lewis paving the way going for 136 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown.

Quarterback Carson Tarver ran for 86 yards on 10 carries with a score and went 10-of-14 for 136 yards with four passing touchdowns. Brenden Garcia caught four of those passes for 62 yards with two TDs.

In the other District 2-2A game, Quanah held off Memphis, 10-6.

District 1-2A 
Division II 

Sunray makes statement in win over Lubbock Christian 

Playing their toughest game since a Week 2 loss against Stratford, Sunray made a statement as a serious contender in Class 2A Division II by blanking Lubbock Christian, one of the state’s best small school TAPPS teams, 34-0, on Friday in Lubbock.

Though LCHS did lose standout quarterback Welker Horn in the second quarter to injury, the Bobcat defense did their job and then some. Sunray absolutely shut down the Eagles offense them to 108 total yards while forcing three turnovers.

Offensively, Sunray totaled 354 yards on 59 plays with standout quarterback Armando Lujan leading the charge going 20-of-30 for 191 yards with three touchdowns. Lujan used his quick feet to chew up 92 yards on nine carries with two more scores.

Receiver Luke Grajeda led the way with six catches for 83 yards and a touchdown catch, Dawson Bennett added a TD and Damian Barragan snagged three catches for 39 yards.

Sunray ends its non-district schedule at 6-1 and will open District 1-2A Division I play at Boys Ranch on Friday.

Vega continues dominance in Oldham County Championship

In the only District 1-2A Division II game on Friday, the Vega Longhorns continued to own the Oldham County championship but more importantly snapped a five-game losing skid by handling Boys Ranch 42-8 at Longhorn Stadium on Friday.

Vega (2-5) also puts itself in a better position as for playoff seeding. All of the District 1-2A Division I teams are in the playoffs, but this win puts the Longhorns at 1-0 and moves them out of the No. 4-seed for the time being. Boys Ranch falls to 2-5, 0-1.

The Longhorns totaled 413 yards to the Roughriders 174 yards.

Running back Jose Silerio was too good for Vega going for 125 rushing yards with a touchdown and passed for 32 yards. Brad Brorman punched in three touchdowns on 120 yards rushing as Casen Brorman threw for 121 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

Defensively, Gatlin Green made 11 tackles.

Gruver gets past Guymon, Okla.

Gruver ended its non-district schedule on a high-note by going across the state line and taking care of Guymon, Okla., 51-31, on Thursday night at Tigers Stadium.

The Greyhounds end the non-district at 5-2 and will open District 1-2A Division I play at home with Vega on Friday. Guymon falls to 4-3.

The Gruver offense was on fire rushing for 421 yards, passing for 217 yards for a massive total of 638 yards.

Quarterback Briggs Satterfield was excellent passing for 217 yards with four touchdowns on 22-of-33 completions. Satterfield even used his feet to rush for 80 yards with a touchdown on seven carries. Running back Pratt McLain went for 116 yards with a TD on 19 carries. Defensively, McLain made nine tackles with three sacks and a forced fumble.

Walker Maupin complimented McLain with 132 yards on 15 carries and caught a pair of touchdowns on 44 yards receiving. Colt Mathews ended his night with four tackles, a sack with a pick six.
