District softball roundup: Amarillo High blanks Caprock, Randall holds off Canyon

District 3-5A

Amarillo High shuts out Caprock

Behind strong pitching and timely hitting, the Amarillo High Lady Sandies were able to open up District 3-5A play with a 4-0 shutout over Caprock at home on Tuesday night.

The Lady Sandies are off to a fantastic start at 19-1 overall and now 1-0 in district. Caprock falls to 9-6-1.

Amarillo High pitcher Tessia Guzman was stellar in the circle working all seven innings allowing only one hit with five strikeouts. Guzman also picked up some great defense behind her. With two on and no out in the top of the second, Caprock’s Kodi Shackelford hit a deep ball to the gap that was tracked down AHS left fielder Taylyn Shuffield. Shuffield hurried the ball back into the infield getting a force out at second and getting the Lady Sandies out of trouble.

Offensively, Kylee Landsbury was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead AHS.

In the other District 3-5A game, Plainview held off Tascosa 7-6. The Lady Rebels fall to 0-1 in the league and 8-12 overall.

District 4-4A

Randall takes down Canyon 

In the first meeting between the two Canyon ISD rivals, it was the Randall Raiders nabbing a 9-6 win over the Lady Eagles at home on Tuesday afternoon.

This is back-to-back wins for Randall which is now 3-2 in District 4-4A and 15-10 overall. Canyon drops to 6-14 overall and 3-2 in district.

Randall built a 7-0 lead behind a five-run second inning highlighted by two-run single from Lauren Garcia and a two-run double from Anberlin O’Dell. O’Dell was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Garcia went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Dumas and Pampa stay unbeaten 

Both Dumas and Pampa stayed undefeated in District 4-4A after convincing wins on Tuesday. The Demonettes blanked Perryton 35-0 while Pampa run-ruled Borger 11-1.

Dumas and Pampa stayed tied atop the district standings at 5-0 as the Demonettes move to 20-3 overall, and Pampa improving to 13-2.

Briana Vargas had a monster afternoon at the plate going 3-for-4 with two grand slams totaling nine RBIs. Teammate Aaliyah Chavez was 5-for-6 with four doubles and seven RBIs. In Pampa’s win against Borger, Cassidy Stanhope was 2-for-3 driving in two runs and scoring three times. Pitcher Kynleigh Kirby went all six innings racking up 11 K’s and hit a 2-run home run at the dish. Borger falls to 2-3 in district and 11-13-1 overall. Perryton is now 9-13-1, 0-5.

West Plains wins first district game 

After a frustrating start to the district season, West Plains was all smiles on Tuesday after going on the road and getting a convincing 12-2 win at Hereford.

It’s the first District 4-4A win in program history for the Lady Wolves who are now 1-4 in the league and 10-12-1 overall. Hereford drops to 9-12, 1-4.

Jaylen Kaps was strong in the circle pitching a complete game handcuffing Hereford to only three hits, allowing two earned runs while running up an impressive 12 strikeouts. West Plains had 11 extra-base hits in the game with nine doubles. Kaps was also dominate at the dish going 3-for-4 with an RBI, Desi Hernandez had a three-run home run and Kaydence Singletary went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

District 1-3A

Bushland dominates Dimmitt

The Bushland Lady Falcons opened up District 1-3A play in a big way pummeling Dimmitt 23-1 on the road on Tuesday.

Junior slugger Brylee Adams did what she does best going 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of home runs and totaling four RBIs. Abby Howell was 4-for-5 at the dish with a homer and four RBIs, and Kylee Jordan had four RBIs of her own on behind two home runs.

Bushland is now 16-6 overall and 1-0 in District 1-3A. Dimmitt falls to 6-4, 0-1.

River Road run-rules Dalhart

River Road opened District 1-3A action up on Monday getting a lopsided 13-1 victory.

The Lady Wildcats improve to 12-8 overall and 1-0 in district. Dalhart drops to 4-8 overall and 0-1.

River Road hurler Carolyn Koval threw five innings of no-hit softball allowing one unearned run and tallied nine strikeouts. Ava Sharp provided the offense going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

In the other District 1-3A game, the Canadian Lady Cats erased a 9-1 seventh inning deficit to beat Tulia 18-9 behind an incredible 17-run top of the seventh inning. Canadian is now 5-15 overall and 1-0 in district.
