Avery Brown, Canyon cross country, So.

On the course: Brown is having one of the most successful cross country seasons of anyone in the Texas Panhandle let alone the entire state. The sophomore displayed just how great a year she’s having at the District 4-4A meet last Friday at Canyon. Brown set a new personal-best time of 11:00.38 that is also a new course record and new district mark. Take away the relay races this year, and Brown has won five of the six meets she has competed in for the Lady Eagles. Brown will compete at the Region I-4A Cross Country meet in Lubbock on Monday. Last year Brown finished sixth individually at the UIL Class 4A state meet in Austin.

Coach Ray Baca: “I feel Avery has had one of the best seasons of any individual in the Texas Panhandle this year. She is reaping the rewards of the work she has done, and she is a much more confident runner than last year. At the district meet last week we had a plan for her to get out fast and she did that from the start. She felt good and kept that momentum going through the race to set the course record and her new personal mark. She works extremely hard day in and day out and I can’t wait to see what she does at the regional meet this coming week.”

Brown: “I think it was great to win individual championship, but I wish my team would have won the district championship. That would have made it more fun and that what is most important to me is running with my team. Personally, I feel like I’ve been running well and I’m happy with how much I’ve improved. I came close to breaking under 11 minutes at district and that is a goal of mine heading into the regional meet though the Lubbock course is very challenging. As a team we want to run better than district and get on the medal stand so we can go to state. My personal goal at regional is to come away with a gold medal and help my team as much as I can.”
