Avion Carter, Tascosa football, Sr.

On the field: In a much-hyped game with crosstown rival Amarillo High to open District 2-5A Division I play in a new location at West Texas A&M’s Buffalo Stadium, it was appropriate that Carter lived up to his reputation. Carter, a defensive lineman who has committed to play for TCU, seemed as if he was camped in Amarillo High’s backfield in Tascosa’s 45-10 victory. Amarillo High never got much going offensively against the Rebels, as Carter was a huge reason why. Carter, playing both inside and outside on the line, recorded six tackles, including one for a loss, along with a sack and a forced fumble which set up a Tascosa touchdown at the beginning of the second half and helped slam the door on the Sandies. Numbers don’t tell the entire story on Carter, though, as his mere presence often creates matchup problems for opponents and can also help other Tascosa defenders make plays.

Coach Ken Plunk: “He can play end or tackle. We bounce him around within a game, sometimes throughout the whole game. He played mainly D-tackle the entire game (against Amarillo High), but it was a good matchup. He was double-teamed and still getting some penetration. I think he also makes (offenses) alter their game plan a little bit because he’s such a difficult block. That’s why we move him around a lot. We don’t want people to scheme him and know exactly where he’s going to be. We’re sitting at game five and he has a lot of tackles for losses and a lot of sacks, but he’s doing some things that also don’t show up. Linebackers make plays when he’s being double-teamed. He’s getting a good pass rush and that helps us in the secondary because now we don’t have to cover for four seconds, we only have to for about 2 ½ seconds. (Former Tascosa end) L.B. (Moore) was dominant as an edge guy but he couldn’t come inside like Avion.”

Carter: “I feel like I did pretty good, but I always see improvement. I always see the next week what I can do better for the team and also what I can tell my teammates what we all need to work on together. We came into the Hereford game (a week earlier) and we knew Amarillo High was going to do the same thing. We take every game seriously, so we went into Amarillo High more prepared. I treat it like a playoff game. It’s just the atmosphere. I’ve been on varsity three years and every year it’s huge. It’s my senior year and I executed. They handled me one-on-one the whole time and I just dominated. Some plays I thought I was gettiing held. It is what it is. I’m just an athlete so I know I’m going to get back there. I hit a couple of moves I knew I was going to do the whole game until they stopped it.”
