Amarillo High routs Odessa to even record

Amarillo High appears to have gotten its offense in gear just in time for the opening of district play next week.

After two straight losses to open the season, the Sandies have pulled things together against opponents from the Permian Basin in back-to-back weeks. AHS jumped on Odessa High early Friday night and rolled to a 42-17 victory at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The Sandies are now 2-2 on the season and carry some vital momentum into next Friday’s District 2-5A Division I opener against crosstown rival Tascosa.

Amarillo High took a 35-3 halftime lead and cruised in the second half. The Sandies were almost perfectly balanced offensively, running for 218 yards and passing for 197.

Running back Pius Vokes is establishing himself as a dual threat, as he ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Vokes also had three catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Mason Graham also continues to improve, as he completed 15-of-21 for 197 yards and four touchdowns. Two of those scoring throws went to Jack Hoeksma.

Class 4A

Dumas destroys Plainview

After giving up an early touchdown, Dumas dominated Plainview in every way imaginable, closing out the game with 57 unanswered points to roll to a 57-6 victory.

Plainview took a 6-0 lead less than five minutes into the game on an 8-yard scoring pass from Isaac Garza to Carson Northcutt.  But after that, it was all Dumas (3-1).

Less than a minute after Plainview’s score, Dumas quarterback Emmanuel Ibanez scored on a 58-yard run to give the Demons an 8-6 lead. It was just the start for a huge game for Ibanez, who threw for 185 yards and four touchdowns, ran for 132 yards and two scores and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Dumas outgained Plainview (1-3) by a 435-109 margin.

West Plains surprises PD for first win in history

The improvement the West Plains Wolves had shown through the first three weeks of the season resulted in a historical outcome Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.

Going north to face established program Palo Duro in their first game away from their home stadium, the Wolves were looking for their first win in program history. They went back home happier than they’d ever left their own field, as they held on to beat Palo Duro for a 28-26 victory.

While West Plains (1-3) played a solid game for the victory, the Wolves got a few breaks to beat Palo Duro (1-3). They had been outscored by a 107-30 margin in their first three games, but got some help from PD, converting turnovers into 21 points.

The difference actually came in the first quarter, as freshman quarterback Reid Macon threw touchdown passes to Jordi Hernandez and King Tallant (a former Palo Duro player) for a 14-6 lead and West Plains never trailed again. Although Palo Duro also scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, the Dons trailed 14-12 because they missed two extra point kicks, the difference in the game.

Macon showed that opponents should be concerned over the next three years, as he completed 19-of-33 passes for 270 yards. Hernandez ran for 95 yards and a touchdown in addition to his scoring catch.

The loss ruined a tremendous effort by PD’s Tre’sean Monroe, who ran for a game-high 165 yards on 20 carries and a pair of third quarter touchdowns. Neither team could score in the fourth quarter, as the Wolves ended up celebrating a historic night.

Tascosa crushes Hereford

Tascosa geared up for next week’s district opener against Amarillo High in strong fashion, as the Rebels got their ground game going again to roll over Hereford 56-10.

It was a fairly typical ground game by committee for Tascosa (3-1), as the Rebels had five players run for touchdowns. Treshun Wilson led the way with 128 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Tascosa quarterback Hudson Farris threw for a touchdown and ran for another.

As prolific as the Rebels were running the ball, they were just as efficient defensively, holding Hereford’s productive passing game in check. Lincoln White and Zag Edwards both returned interceptions for touchdowns for Tascosa.

Hereford fell to 0-4 and the Whitefaces have given up over 50 points to each of their first four opponents.

Randall scores late to beat Wichita Falls

In one of the more exciting games if the evening, Randall got through a wild fourth quarter and scored the winning touchdown with under a minute left to beat Wichita Falls 44-38 at Happy State Bank Stadium.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with the teams combining for 879 yards of offense. There were 10 lead changes before it ended.

Wichita Falls took a 38-36 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Particio Maldonado. But with 57 seconds left, Randall (3-1) capped a 64-yard scoring drive on a 1-yard run by Riley Davis, and the Raiders held defensively the rest of the way.

Davis ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, Dylan Ray led the Raiders with 25 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns.

Bushland routs Borger

Bushland continued to dominate on both sides of the ball, as the Falcons opened the game with 28 unanswered points and rolled to a 51-13 win at Borger to stay undefeated.

Quarterback Dawson Jaco completed 17-of-27 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for two scores while Ivan Soto ran for 106 yards on 16 carries. Overall, Bushland (4-0) outgained Borger (2-2) by a staggering 483-120 margin.
