Girls Regional Golf roundup: Childress advances to state, Memphis claims 2A regional title

The Childress Lady Bobcats shaved off 13 strokes from their first round score to sneak past Bushland for third place and qualify for the UIL Class 3A State Tournament.

After shooting a first round 383 during Wednesday’s first round of the Region I-3A Tournament at the Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird, Childress carded a team score of 383 on Thursday to finish with a 370. That two-day total of 753 was good enough to get by the Lady Falcons for third place and earn the final spot state.

It’s the second year in a row Childress has punched a ticket to Austin.

Elena Jurado led Childress by placing 10th overall with rounds of 91-89— 180. Jurado was followed by teammates — Isabella Jurado 98-91— 189; Savannah Rabe 97-93— 190; Cassandra Castor 104-97— 201; Sarah Castillo 97-115— 212.

Bushland’s Logan Culpepper, the daughter of volleyball coach, Jason Culpepper, did advance to state for the second straight year as an individual. The junior took second individually with two superb rounds of 75-73— 148.

Wall (333-323— 656) was the regional team champion. Shay West of Wall winning the regional individual title scoring a 75-72— 147.

The UIL Class 3A State Tournament is set for May 16-17 at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Region I-2A

Memphis carried on its strong tradition of girls golf by claiming the Region I-2A team championship on Thursday afternoon at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon.

The Lady Cyclones, who have won an unprecedented nine state titles in school history, carded rounds of 403-392— 795, to hold off second place Wink (414-401— 815).

On top of winning the team championship, Maggie Cook of Memphis won the regional individual title. Cook scored rounds of 96-91— 187 beating Olton’s Kylee Noack (96-93— 189) by two strokes. Teammate Braylee Brooks also finishes in the top 10 placing fifth overall with a two-day total of 102-96— 198.

Stratford’s Brendi Brown will advance to the state tournament as an individual. Brown tied for eighth (101-104— 205).

The UIL Class 2A State Tournament is set for May 16-17 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

Region I-5A note

The Amarillo High Lady Sandies came up just short of advancing during the final found of the Region I-5A Tournament on Thursday at the Rawls Course in Lubbock.

AHS fell in a playoff for the third and final spot to Burleson Centennial. The Lady Sandies shot rounds of 351-341— 692. Charlee Thacker of AHS did qualify for state as an individual. Thacker placed fourth overall firing a total of 76-72— 148.

Randall (380-374— 754) finished in ninth overall as a team.

Aledo (326-312— 638) was the regional team champions. Mason Lewis (69-71— 140) of Grandbury was the individual regional winner
