Home Athlete of the Week

Callie Conyers, Gruver, basketball, Sr.

On the court: Conyers capped off an amazing playoff run with two superb performances that helped the No. 1 Gruver Lady Hounds finish a perfect 33-0 season and a second UIL Class 2A state championship in the past three years in San Antonio’s Alamodome on Friday and Saturday. The senior forward scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting with three rebounds during Gruver’s 69-29 blowout of San Saba in the semifinals. In Saturday’s 50-38 state championship victory over Stamford, Conyers, once again rose to the occasion pouring in 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, pulling down seven rebounds. On the season, Conyers ended her year averaging 9.5 points a game, 3.6 rebounds a contest, and shot 56 percent from the field.

Coach Trent Lankford: “Callie was a huge factor for us during the season and in the playoffs. Callie had the ability to stretch a defense with her size, scoring inside and outside. She also plays such great defense always playing against a team’s best post player. One of my favorite things about Callie, is every time she was announced in starting lineup she had the biggest smile on her face. She always plays with such enthusiasm, and is always there for her teammates.”

Conyers: “Winning the state championship has been an unreal feeling. This team worked all year for this goal, and there’s nothing but joy. I think what was so special about our team is how we handled adversity anytime it was thrown at us. We take so much pride in playing for each other, and we knew how to handle every situation. I think what drove me the most this season is my confidence. I finally understood I could play a bigger role, and I knew I could do that. It was just such a special year.”
