Caprock senior standout Tatiana Garcia capped off an epic career, and an amazing two year run by going back-to-back as an individual state champion in the 119-pound division.

Garcia went 4-0 at the state tournament, beating El Paso Chapin’s Keilani Guillermo by an 11-5 decision to capture her second gold medal. Garcia ended her season at an unblemished 41-0, and finished her high school career winning 66 straight matches after a 25-0 record last season.

Garcia is a four-time state qualifier, with two third place finishes as a freshman and sophomore. She also joins her mother, Miny, as a Caprock team champion. Miny was a part of Caprock’s 2000 state title team.

Coach Chris Allen: “It meant a lot to us to be able to bring back a state championship to Caprock. We knew we had a chance going in, and things went our way Saturday. Our team was resilient and made it happen. Tatiana and the seniors were my first group as freshman when I took over, and they are a special group. As for Tatiana, she’s such a key part of what we do. Her work ethic is another level. She never misses a practice, she makes additional practices, she’s always in the weight room. Tatiana works like she’s never won a state title before. What I love the most is she was more proud to win the team championship than her own individual championship. That’s what makes her unique. She’s selfless.”

Garcia: “Being able to win a team title was special. Just to enjoy this with all of my teammates and coaches really showed all the hard work we put in pay off. It’s just so exciting to go out as a senior with a team state championship. To win it again as an individual was challenging, but something that I’ll never forget. It just all means so much to me, I can’t believe how this year ended the way it did.”
