Palo Duro boys takes down AHS to open a busy week of district soccer action

The Palo Duro and Amarillo High boys soccer teams highlighted the open to the District 3-5A soccer schedule Monday at Dick Bivins Stadium with a very entertaining contest between two highly talented teams.

The Dons were able to gain the upper hand in this first meeting earning a hard fought 3-2 victory. With the game tied, 2-2, Jaime Carillo netted the goal on an assist from Adrian Ruiz at the 65 minute mark. Ruiz tallied a goal and an assist on the evening, as Carillo also tacked on an assist. Amarillo High’s Sam Newman and Braden Williamson scored for the Sandies.

Palo Duro moves to 13-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in district. AHS falls to 9-3-1, and 0-1-0.

Tascosa and Randall were the other match to get district going on Tuesday at Dick Bivins Stadium. The Rebels and Raiders played to a 1-1 tie. Tascosa’s lone goal came by Eh Maw at the 22 minute mark of the first half. Rebels goalie Richard Ybarra made 13 saves on the night. Randall’s only score came in the second half from Brock Parker in the 56th minute.

Tascosa is now 5-5-1 overall, and 0-0-1 in District 3-5A. Randall is 5-6-1, 0-0-1.

In girls action, Amarillo High opened district with an 11-0 blanking of Palo Duro on Monday. The Lady Sandies, who reached the Class 5A regional finals a year ago, opened up a 5-0 lead in the first half. Lilly Cook tallied a hat trick with two assists. Teammate Lily Soby scored two goals with three assists, and Sam Wilhelm added a pair of goals and an assist. The Lady Sandies are off to an 11-2-2 start to the year, and are 1-0-0 in district. Palo Duro falls to 3-6-1, 0-1-0.

Randall also pulled a shutout by blanking Tascosa 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Maguire Guest gave the Lady Raiders a 1-0 lead in the first half off a penalty kick. In the second half, Kealy Juarez scored, followed by another goal netted by Vanessa Baca. Randall improves to 9-2-1 overall, and 1-0-0 in district. Tascosa falls to 3-9-0, 0-1-0.

A busy week continues with Amarillo High and Tascosa playing a boy-girl doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Friday night at Dick Bivins Stadium. Caprock opens district play at Randall. District 4-4A also gets underway.
