Hereford holds off Bushland in shortened contest; Dumas, Pampa, Canyon nab victories

Hereford led Bushland 14-7 with nine minutes left in the third quarter before the game was called due to inclement weather at Whiteface Stadium on Friday.

Hereford can technically count the game as a win moving to 2-0 on the year, though Bushland doesn’t have to count it in the loss column.

Despite giving up a 75-yard touchdown slant to Falcon speedster Kash Bradley moments before the game was called due to lightning, the Hereford defense was tremendous holding Bushland’s offense to 150 total yards and forcing two first half turnovers.

Linebacker Eric Lucio was flying around the football making 12 tackles in a sack in three quarters of work.

The Whitefaces broke a defensive struggle in the second quarter. Hereford quarterback Gerardo Garcia hit Noah Brown down the middle of the field for a 45-yard pass play setting up his team inside the Falcons 30-yard line. A couple plays later, Garcia found pay dirt going untouched into the endzone from 12-yards out giving Hereford a 7-0 lead.

The score remained the same to the early moments of the third quarter when first-year coach went to his bag of tricks. Threatening again at the Bushland 12-yard line, Garcia rolled left and threw back right to eligible lineman Aiden Arias who rumbled in for the dream sequence putting Hereford up 14-0 with 10:30 left in the third.

Garcia had thrown for 174 yards when the game was stopped. Brown had snagged four catches for 86 yards.

Dumas downs Estacado with late score

A young Dumas Demons squad grew up in a hurry in a thrilling come-from-behind, 30-27, victory taking down Lubbock Estacado on Friday night at Demons Stadium.

The only time Dumas led in this exciting contest was on its eventual game-winning drive midway into the fourth quarter. Trailing 27-22 with just over eight minutes to play in the game, Demons running back James Bednorz found his way into the endzone from 4-yards out, Grayson McCurley added a 2-point conversion giving

Dumas the 30-27 lead that held up the rest of the way.

The Matadors (1-1) led 13-12 after the first quarter then took a 27-19 lead into halftime. However, the Demons defense stiffened holding Estacado scoreless in the final two quarters, and were able to tack on 11 straight points to end the game.

The Demons defense held Estacado to a total of 161 yards of offense.

Bednorz did tough running for Dumas piling up 135 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown.

Brayden Boggs-Rushing led the team with 5.5 tackles and a sack. Estacado receiver Larry Williams snagged three catches for 65 yards and a TD.

Dumas picks up its first win of the year improving to 1-1.

Landers leads Pampa past Dalhart

Pampa’s Cornelius Landers showed why he’s one of the area’s most productive running backs, as he led Pampa’s offense in a 37-29 win over Dalhart to give first-year coach Cody Robinson his first win as a head coach at home, as the Harvesters held off Dalhart’s second half charge.

Pampa led 23-0 at half before the Golden Wolves made a push in the fourth quarter.

Landers led the Harvesters (1-1) by rushing for 235 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. That paced a 464-yard offensive effort by Pampa.

Sam Anguiano threw for one touchdown and ran for another for the Harvesters, who led 23-0 at halftime. Dalhart fell to 0-2 on the season.

Eagles bounce Burkburnett

Canyon bounced back in a big way from a season-opening loss to rival Randall by pummeling Burkburnett 43-7 on Friday night at Happy State Bank Stadium.

It was a very frustrating evening for the Eagles (1-1) who jumped out to a 22-0 lead before having two sit through a two plus hour lightning delay.

When the contest finally resumed Canyon kept its foot on the gas pedal taking a commanding 36-7 advantage into half.

The win had extra significance as the Eagles picked up the first career victory for first-year coach Todd Winfrey.

Canyon quarterback Derreck Clements was near perfect completing 11-of-14 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Dario Bressler and Elijah Smothermon both went over the century mark rushing. Bressler toted the ball 17 times for 109 yards with a pair of scores, while Smotherman had 110 yards on only eight carries and a TD.

Sophomore Christian McGuire did a little bit of everything to bury the Bulldogs (0-2). McGuire was a perfect 3-for-3 in his snaps under center for 39 yards, rushed for 84 yards on three carries with a touchdown, and caught a 64-yard touchdown pass.
