Amarillo High track teams sweep at District 3-5A Track Meet

Amarillo High made it a clean sweep claiming team championships at the District 3-5A Track and Field Meet on Thursday and Friday at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The Sandies took the team title for a fifth straight year by racking up 238 points, while Tascosa came in second with 154.

The Lady Sandies were also impressive by winning the district crown tallying 215 points, as Randall placed second with 183 points.

The AHS boys won earned 60 points claiming gold in all three relay events. The Sandies 400 meter relay braved the gusty winds to clock a 43.21, then ran a 1:31.34 in the 800 meter relay, followed by a 3:27.20 in the 1600 meter relay.

Senior Trey Thomas had a great afternoon. Thomas was the opening leg of the gold medal winning 400 relay, the anchor leg of the 1600 relay, and punched a ticket to the area meet by claiming victory in the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.89. Thomas also placed second in the long jump leaping a 20-1.

Teammate Damonze Woods found the medal stand three times himself. Woods cleared a personal-best 6-4 to take gold in the high jump, ran a 50.51 to gain a victory in the 400 meter run, and was on the mile relay.

In girls action, the Lady Sandies won seven of the running finals Friday including the 400 meter relay (49.32) and 1600 meter relay (4:10.68).

AHS sprinter Bree Mixon held off Joyce Wesley (12.26) of Palo Duro by running a 12.17 to win the 100 meter dash. Teammate Brianna Brantley (25.42) also claimed gold holding off Lady Don Juantai Williams (25.51) in the 200 meter.

Mixon and Brantley even found the gold medal stand as part of the sprint relay.

The top four athletes in each event qualify for the area meet.

The 3-5/ 4-5A Area Meet is set for Thursday, April 15 at Lowrey Field-PlainsCapital Park in Lubbock.

Boys district notes

Tascosa’s Major Everhart went double gold for the Rebels Friday. The junior, who is up to 15 Division I football offers, clocked a 10.50 to win gold in the 100 meter dash, then turned around and took a victory in the 200 blazing a 21.78.

Amarillo High’s Foster Bentley tossed personal-best 152-7 to win the discus event. Bentley also earned silver in the shot put throwing a 48-1.

Randall’s Daniel Chavez won gold in the shot put with a season-best throw of 50-1.

Girls district notes

The Randall Lady Raiders highlighted plenty of action of their own Thursday and Friday. Sierra Sanchez brought home a district title in the 3200 meter run Thursday pacing a season-best 11:57.54. On Friday, teammate Ariyah Gomez followed by winning the 1600 meter run with a 5:29.51.

Alex Bettag keeps getting better each and every week. Bettag ran her best hurdle race to date during district blazing a 14.77 on Friday go find the gold medal stand, and Kailee Benton added to her outstanding season jumping a new personal-best 17-9 to take a victory in the long jump.
