The Canyon Lady Eagles cross country dynasty took another sweet step on Tuesday afternoon at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Canyon fought off Celina to win by a slim six-point margin to claim the program’s prestigious third straight University Scholastic League Class 4A team title.
The Lady Eagles tallied 68 points which was just enough to fend off Celina’s 74 points. Canyon’s 3-peat also means they’ve held the state trophy all three years since moving into 4A.
“It was an awesome day,” Canyon coach Ray Baca said. “Its been a long season, not only because of COVID, but also because this is the latest we’ve ever had the state meet. Im so proud of the dedication and persistence our girls have shown since May. We are so grateful for all of the blessings and support we have gotten.”
Sophomore runner Abree Winfrey ran a great race for Canyon earning a bronze medal individually by running an 11:45.83. It’s Winfrey’s second bronze in as many years. Junior Breanna Stuart, the Region I-4A champion, placed ninth clocking a 12:13.33, while teammate Hannah Stuart finished in the top 20 with an 18th place finish pacing a 12:29.79 respectively.
Celina’s Adele Clarke won the individual championship with a time of 11:31.04.
In the boys race, Perryton made its first appearance in five years at the state meet count reaching the podium by earning third place, and a bronze medal. Julian Rivero (16:27.36) finished 16th to lead the Rangers.
Canyon senior Samuel Ashley took fourth place overall as an individual clocking a 15:46.02.
Class 2A

The Texas Panhandle showed its strength in a huge way on the girls side of the Class 2A state cross country meet Tuesday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
A total of four Amarillo-area runners placed in the top 10, the Gruver girls team earned a silver medal finishing second, however, Wellington’s Kyla Kane highlighted the meet with an outstanding race, running the two-mile course in 12:08.49 to claim her second 2A individual title in the past three years.
The junior continues to put her stamp on an unbelievable running career. Kane, who’s won three straight Region I-2A championships, has now taken gold at state in two of the last three years.
“Winning two state championships throughout my high school career means the world to me,” Kane said. “The countless hours of early morning runs and practice shows all the hard work and sacrifices that I have made paid off. Coach (Chris) Sumrall has been with me since the beginning and has been an amazing coach who understands me, and shares the same competitive drive.
“My teammates back at home are also the reason I have the gold medal today. They understand the sport like no other and have been with me throughout the painful miles. I wanted them to know exactly what they mean to me, and that they are the number one reason I had the drive to reclaim the champion title. I also have a great family filled with support and a loving community behind me pushing me all the way.”
Kane won the Class 2A state title as a freshman, was a runner-up as a sophomore, and is now a two-time state champion with her win Tuesday.
The Gruver girls took second place with 72 points, coming in right behind team state champion Sundown (52 points). Sophomore Brenna Butler placed fourth to lead the Lady Hounds, clocking a 12:45.71. Abigail Salgado also placed in the top 20, coming in 17th running a 13:06.84.
Farwell’s Kadey Urbantke (12:46.96) placed fifth as an individual, followed by Sunray’s Katelyn Hernandez in seventh with a 12:57.17.
In the boys race, Shamrock’s Hayden Stroope led all Amarillo-area runners by coming in 20th running a 17:21.44.
