In the playoffs it’s win at all cost. That’s what the Dumas is learning through the first two weeks of the University Interscholastic League postseason.
The Demons came-from-behind yet again this time rallying to beat Andrews, 31-20, in a Class 4A Division I area round game at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldogs Stadium in Plainview on Thursday night.
In last week’s bidistrict round Dumas erased a 27-0 deficit to Lake Worth scoring 37 unanswered points for a thrilling 37-27 victory.
In A deja vu type performance in Thursday’s area round, the Demons pulled off another crazy comeback deleting a 20-7 halftime deficit by scoring 24 unanswered, 21 of those points in the third quarter, to sink the Mustangs.
Like Lake Worth, Andrews (8-5) came out firing against the Demons secondary. Quarterback E.J. Lopez threw for 246 first half yards with three touchdowns building the Mustangs 14-point halftime lead. Instead of panicking, Dumas played stayed calm, and swayed the momentum by the early stages of the third quarter. After holding Andrews to a 3-and-out to open the second half, Dumas took its opening drive 54 yards that resulted in a Spencer Williams 4-yard pass to Juan Romero, cutting the advantage, 20-14. Two drives later, Jacob Mares punched in a 21-yard touchdown run, and in the blink of an eye the Demons had the lead for good, 21-20. Not a minute later Dumas defensive back Louis Ortiz grabbed an interception, his second of the game, that setup a Williams 19-yard strike to Victor Chavez for a 28-20 lead. Kicker Ah Lee Yart added a clutch 38-yard field goal into a stiff south wind early in the fourth quarter, as Dumas made the comeback complete.
After giving up 248 yards by half, Dumas limited Andrews to 125 yards in the second half.
Williams finished the game 13-of-22 for 174 yards with two touchdown passes. Juan Romero snagged six passes for 103 yards with a score.
Dumas improves to 11-1 overall, and is back in third round of the playoffs for a second year in a row. The Demons will now face the Springtown-Big Spring winner in the regional semifinals at a time and place to be determined.

Canyon blows out Fort Stockton
Canyon cruised its way into the third round of the playoffs with a lopsided win against Fort Stockton, 59-7, in a Class 4A Division I area matchup Thursday at Peoples Bank Stadium in Wolfforth.
The Eagles (10-1) overall advance on to the regional semifinals for a big meeting with Decatur (7-5) at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27 at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium in Abilene.
Canyon jumped all over the Panthers (5-6) opening up a 17-0 first quarter lead. By halftime, head coach Blake Bryant’s team was in complete control up, 38-0.
The Canyon defense, which has only allowed one touchdown in the playoffs, held Fort Stockton to under 100 yards of total offense, and forced six turnovers.
On the offensive side, quarterback Jay Defoor threw for over 400 yards with four touchdown passes. The run game was stellar piling up 300 yards led by Brody Cook and Dario Bressler, who each went over the century mark while punching in a touchdown.

AHS downs longtime rival Palo Duro
Amarillo High put the breaks on a two-game losing skid with a thumping of its oldest rival Palo Duro 63-3 in a District 2-5A Division I contest Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.
The Sandies racked up 597 yards of offense highlighted by the execution of quarterback Brock Wade. Wade picked a part the Dons completing 21-of-26 passes for a career-high 414 yards and five touchdown tosses. One of those TD receptions went to speedy wideout Jameson Garcia who took turned on the jets for a 97-yard scoring play. That play was part of a career effort for the sophomore, who hauled in six catches for 177 yards and two scores.
Teammate and senior leader Davin Lemmons added four catches for 57 yards and a TD.
AHS moves to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in district. Palo Duro is now 1-6, 1-3.
