Like they have all year the Canyon defense came to play earning a 16-0 slugfest win in a Class 4A Division I bidistrict game at Wichita Falls Hirschi on Thursday night at

Memorial Stadium.

The Huskies were playing without sophomore starting quarterback Terrius Causey. Causey was in quarantine due to COVID-19 concerns.

Against a defense as good as Canyon’s and a backup QB, Hirschi struggled to move the ball.

The Eagles shutdown the pass game, holding Hirschi to 17 yards, as well as took away the running attack. The Coyotes (5-4) never found

found momentum against Canyon’s relentless defense without Causey totaling 81 total yards, being stifled to 64 rushing yards.

Canyon’s offense wasn’t explosive by any means but did get the job done. Canyon avoided mistakes, while taking advantage of Hirschi miscues scoring the first 10 points of the game came on Coyotes turnovers.

That gave the Eagles a 10-0 halftime lead, but it was the third quarter where the offense did its part.

Canyon took the opening possession of the second half and marched 75 yards in 17 plays, eating 9:03 from the game clock. Brody Cook put the Eagles up 16-0 punching in a 3-yard run with 2:57 left in the third, sinking any Coyotes of a comeback.

Cook was heavily relied on taking the ball 32 times for 84 yards and a score. Teammate Dario Bressler complimented Cook with 12 carries for 71 yards.

The Eagles (9-1 overall) advance to the area round to play Fort Stockton (5-5) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Bank Stadium in Wolfforth.

Tascosa stays perfect in district running past Caprock

Tascosa’s heavy run arsenal was in full effect

behind numerous ballcarriers that added up to a 32-13 win on a chilly Thursday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The Rebels didn’t complete a pass, picked up a solid effort from their offense line, and the defense did its part which kept Tascosa (6-1, 4-0) unbeaten in District 2-5A Division I.

Tascosa got all of its 481 yards on the ground.

Each of Tascosa’s first two possessions ended in L’Travion Brown touchdown runs. The first one was from 19 yards and the second one from 15 as the Rebels led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Rebels again got big production from quarterback BT Daniel. Daniel ran for a game-high 101 yards on 14 carries. Junior tailback Major Everhart, last week’s here in the Rebels come-from-behind 28-27 against rival Amarillo High, didn’t take snaps this week under center but did run for 68 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown.
