H.S. Volleyball Tuesday recap: District 4-4A opens in thrilling fashion

The District 4-4A season got off to a bang Tuesday night thanks to two thrilling five-set matches concerning arguably its top four teams.

The highlight match of the night was between two great rivals. Canyon visited No. 7-ranked Hereford, and in now way did it disappoint.

The Lady Whitefaces had to fend off a valiant effort from the Lady Eagles earning a hard fought 25-19, 25-19, 26-28, 21-25, 15-10.

Hereford (12-1, 1-0) was seemingly in control taking the first two sets, but Canyon rallied with a huge third set and kept the momentum rolling into the fourth.

In the fifth set, the Lady Eagles (7-4, 0-1) actually held a 10-9 advantage before the Lady Whitefaces reeled off the last six points for the win.

Middle blocker Taytum Stow was incredible at the net for Hereford knocking down a game-high 24 kills to go with four blocks. Rainey Aven did her job getting Stow and the hitters the ball dishing out 51 assists.

Canyon’s Raylee Bain and Carlee Henderson had 15 kills each. Teammate Ryan Roden added 50 assists.

Hereford and Canyon wasn’t the only fantastic match in the district Tuesday. Dumas and Pampa, which have battled for district titles the past two years, weren’t to be outdone.

The Demonettes went into “The Pit” in Pampa, and left with a 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 12-25, 15-10 victory.

Dumas improves to 11-4 overall with the win and 1-0 in District 4-4A, while the Lady Harvesters fall to 10-5, 1-1.

The Demonettes were led by Abree Elsheimer 12 kills and three aces. Jazzy Ortiz hit the floor for 21 digs.

Nondistrict notes

In the last seven days No. 3-ranked Bushland from Class 3A has wins against Amarillo High, Frenship, Lubbock Monterey and can now add Tascosa to the list.

The Lady Falcons (16-2) took care of the Lady Rebels in convincing fashion, 25-9, 25-19, 25-13. Middle blocker Hallie Conklin had a huge game for Bushland pounding down a game-high 15 kills with 10 digs. Teammate Taryn Schultz handed out 23 assists, made three blocks and served three aces.

After an 0-4 start the Amarillo High Lady Sandies have now put together back-to-back victories.

AHS dominated Lubbock Monterey 25-8, 25-6, 25-21 on the road Tuesday.

Junior Currie Murasak and senior Ashlyn Vinyard each had 12 kills. Sophomore setter Jo Moffitt added 17 assists with three aces.
