The Amarillo Sod Dogs were able to shift the momentum of their key Hodgetown Showdown series against the Sod Squad gaining a wild 20-11 win in front of 1,831 fans at Hodgetown Thursday night.
Anyone that loves offense was glad to be at this contest. The game saw 31 runs, a total of 33 hits, 13 pitchers used, and six home runs.
The Sod Dogs hit four of the homers highlighted by grand slams by Enrique Porchas and Johnny Pappas.
Teammates Eduardo Acosta and Karl Koerper also went deep.
Pappas ended his night with a team-best five RBIs, going 4-for-5 at the dish. Porchas was 2-for-6 with the four RBIs while Acosta was 3-for-6, driving in two runs.
Sod Squad standouts and twin brothers, David and Julio Marcano, went a combined 6-for-11 at the plate. David homered for the second night in a row on a solo shot in the top of the first.
The Sod Squad have taken two of the first three meetings in this six-game series. Before Thursday’s loss, the Sod Squad won the opener Tuesday, 12-8, followed by an 11-6 victory Wednesday.
The Sod Squad (13-8 overall) hold also hold a one-game lead on the Sod Dogs (12-9 overall) for first place in the Texas Collegiate League North Division standings.
The series continues with Sod Squad now taking the home dugout Friday through Sunday. Friday and Saturday’s games will be at 7:05 p.m. with Sunday’s game starting at 6:05 p.m.

A rare baseball feat happened in the Sod Squads win Tuesday. Outfielder Lyle Miller-Green, who plays his college ball at George Mason, hit for the cycle. Miller-Green’s career performqnce at Hodgetown saw him go a perfect 4-for-4, hitting a single, double, triple, and to top it off a grand slam, finishing with eight RBIs.
Night in and night out Mathew Garcia and Eduardo Acosta are establishing themselves as two of the top hitters in the TCL. In 21 games, Garcia, who plays his college baseball at Bethune-Cookman, is hitting an eye-opening .382 with four doubles and 11 RBIs.
Acosta, a Lubbock Christian sophomore, is equally impressive, batting .370, with three homers and 23 RBIs.
Twin brothers, David and Julio Marcano, continue to tear the cover off the baseball regardless of who’s on the mound. So far in this series with the Sod Dogs, the twins are a combined 13-for-31 (.419) with three combined homers and five RBIs.
The two also hit home runs in the same game Wednesday on their father, Cesar, 53rd birthday.
