10 Amarillo-area boys basketball players to watch entering the district season

Brendan Hausen, Amarillo High, 6-foot-4, Soph. Guard

Only a sophomore, Hausen already has Division I offers to Texas Tech and Oklahoma. Through the first 22 games the elite shooting guard is averaging 16 points a game, on 65 percent shooting from the field. Hausen is knocking down 45 percent of his buckets from beyond the arc, and averages 3.4 assists a game.

Jelani Mohamed, Palo Duro, 6-foot, Jr. Guard

The lighting quick guard is explosive from the perimiter already draining 50, 3-point buckets in his first 13 games. On the season, Mohamed is one of the Dons top scorers averaging 15.4 points a game.

Isaiah Johnson, 6-foot, Tascosa, Sr. Guard

Johnson is a lock down defender that’s averaging over three steals a contest. To go with his strong defensive suit, the reigning District 2-6A Defensive MVP, is averaging 11 ppg to with six rebounds and six steals.

Chase Landers, Pampa, 6-foot-2, Sr. Guard

The four-year starter is the leader for a Harvesters team that is off to a great start through theIr nondistrict schedule. Landers is putting up team-best 22.9 points per game, with 8.1 rebounds a game, adding six assists per contest.

Jalin Conyers, Gruver, 6-foot-5, Sr. Forward

Yes, he’s signed to play football at Oklahoma, however, he’s still one of the top basketball players Amarillo-area. The four-year starter won a Class 2A state championship at West Texas High as a sophomore, and led Gruver to a state finals appearance last year. In limited action this year, the athletic forward is putting up 15 points and eight boards a game.

Zach Barsalou, Dalhart, 6-foot-5, Sr. Forward

The Golden Wolves captain has an unbelievable motor night in and night out. Barsalou does it all for Dalhart, averaging a double-double with 22.5 ppg and 11.4 boards. He also dishes out 4.1 assists and nabs 3.9 steals per game.

Josh Culwell, Canadian, 6-foot-2, Jr. Forward

The athletic guard is a difficult to matchup with thanks to his length, his vertical, and his ability to get to the bucket. Through only four games, the 6-foot-2 junior has shown no signs of a foot injury he suffered during football season, scoring 12.8 ppg, grabbing 6.3 rpg and handing out four assists per game.

Jonah Villanueva, West Texas High, 5-foot-9, Sr. Guard

The senior leader is a pure shooting guard that can flat out score the basketball.

On the season, the 2017 Class 2A state tournament MVP, averages 19.2 points a night with 3.3 steals and hands out 4.9 assists a game.

Austin Calhoun, Vega, 6-foot, Sr. Guard

Calhoun has settled in nicely since transferring from Wheeler to Vega after his father, Sonny, took over as the Longhorns boys basketball coach. So far on the year, the senior guard is averaging a double-double, pouring in 14 points and 10 rebounds a game.

Will Luther, Texline, 6-foot-4, Soph. Guard

Luther is the next talented players in a recent list at Texline over the past decade. Through 17 games this sophomore season, the 6-foot-4 guard is scoring 19.8 ppg, pulling down 11.5 rebounds a night, while getting 3.3 steals.
