FRISCO— Tascosa saw another great postseason run through the Class 6A Division II playoffs come to a bitter end Saturday afternoon.
The Rebels struggled to find answer for a potent Denton Guyer offense, falling to the Wildcats 48-7 in the quarterfinal round at the illustrious Ford Center at the Star in Frisco.
Don’t let this loss take away the precedent set by coach Ken Plunk, his staff and his team for Texas Panhandle football at the big school level over the past two seasons.
In an unforgiving Class 6A, Tascosa has shown that they belong in the conversation of one of the top program’s in the state’s highest classifications.
Over the past two years, the Rebels have made on of the greatest runs in Amarillo ISD history playing in 29 games, going 21-8, with a 7-2 mark in the postseason.
It’s been said multiple times over the years that the Amarillo-area can’t compete with the Metroplex. Well, Tascosa hushed those naysayers with victories over Arlington High, Lake Ridge, Haltom, Arlington Bowie and Flower Mound Marcus.
In last years state semifinal, the Rebels put a scare into powerhouse Longview coming within three points of playing for a state championship.
“End of the day this team has played 29 games in two years,” said Plunk, whose team was 10-4 this season. “We’ve been a state semifinalist, a state quarterfinalist, and there is nothing left to prove.”

Out of the many seniors the Rebels will say goodbye to, none maybe more special than Plunk’s youngest son, Joseph. Joseph, a master of his fathers Flexbone offense, is arguably the best quarterback in school history. Though he suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter, and didn’t have that shining moment to end his career, Joseph’s respect rang through the crowd with a “thank you Joseph” chant while he walked off the field after as high school player for the final time.
Over the past 29 games, Joseph has been nothing short of remarkable, totaling 4,269 career rushing yards with 50 rushing TDs.
“It’s been an amazing ride,” Joseph said. “I think we brought a lot of excitement to Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle. We can play with these Metroplex schools. I’m excited to see what Tascosa is going to do.”
One thing is for certain, the foundation has been built for Tascosa and the future is bright. with a move to Class 5A Division I next fall.
