Q&A with SFA linebacker Bert Morris

Bert Morris, a 2017 Tascosa graduate, enters his junior year at Stephen F. Austin State this fall.

The 6-foot-1, 225 pound linebacker has appeared in 21 games through his first two seasons for the Lumberjacks, racking up 37 tackles and 17 solo tackles.

Morris is expected to play a pivotal role in first-year head coach Colby Carthel’s defense as a starting linebacker.

Morris took time out of his schedule to visit with Press Pass Sports on his career at SFA.

How has your time been at SFA? “The first two years moved pretty slow for me. I’ve been waiting for my time to come, and now it’s here. I only have two years left so I want to make the best out of them.”

Where do you feel you’ve improves the most in three years? “I’ve worked hard at getting stronger. I weighed 195 in high school and now i’m 225 pounds. I’ve improved my tackling and making sure I’m the best I can be at that.”

This will be your third coach in three years, do you think Colby Carthel will bring stability to SFA? “I feel this team is blessed to have coach Carthel. He’s really changing the culture. I don’t mean the football team, I mean the campus. We’re involved in community service and positive energy.”

What do you like the most from coach Carthel and his staff? “The commitment. They make sure we’re on time whether it’s at practice, in class and in the weight room.”

Is this the most positive you and your teammates have felt coming into a fall camp? “No doubt. We’ve never been pushed like we have in the spring, and we’re more in shape than we ever have been. I feel we’re in a position where we can compete in the Southland Conference.”

Do you still follow your Tascosa Rebels? “Oh yea. I’m so proud of coach (Ken) Plunk and what they accomplished last year. I was at the state semi final game. I stay in touch with King Doerue every day. Because of King and Brandon (White) They have schools coming through there now we never had before, and they’ve really opened things up for guys.”
