1-1A/ 2-1A Area Track and Field meet
Just like they did at the district meet a week ago, the White Deer Bucks and Does dominated once more making it a sweep of team championships during the 1-2/ 2-2A Area Track and Field meet Wednesday at Bucks Stadium in White Deer.
The Does were able to total 114 points to fend off Claude, which finished in second place with 92.
On a day where there were so many showcase individual performances, White Deer’s Makayla Chaney helped her team especially in the long distance events taking home three gold medals. Chaney opened her morning with a win in the 3200-meter race clocking a time of 11:58.81. In the afternoon running finals, Chaney won her second individual gold in the 1600-meter race with a time of 5:35.34, and she ended the day with her third trip to the gold medal stand as a part of the 800-meter relay team (1:54.04).

McLean’s Gracee Henderson had a stellar day on the track to help get the McLean Lady Tigers 88 points and a third place finish. The Lady Tiger standout showed her speed Wednesday taking gold in the 400-meter dash (1:01.78), then won another gold in the 800-meter race (2:26.68) and was the anchor leg for McLean’s mile relay team that won with a time of 4:29.09.
Kelton’s McKinzi McManus is having quite the year. Following five golds at the District 1-2A meet last week, McManus walked away with plenty of hardware at area, qualifying for regional in five events. McManus won the long jump leaping a 16-1 3/4 and cleared 5-feet for another gold in the high jump. McManus earned silver in the triple jump (33-1 1/4) for a third medal. In the running portion, McManus claimed another silver in the 100-meter dash (12.78) and a bronze in the 200-meter (28.28).
On the boys’ side, White Deer cruised with 161.5 points for an area championship. Like he did last week at district, Caynden Mynear led the Bucks to the area title by qualifying for regionals in four events thanks to four gold medals.
Mynear cleared 5-feet-10 inches for his gold of the day in the field events. During the running finals, Mynear put on a show starting in the 800-meter run with a gold medal time of 2:06.56. The Buck standout left the field behind in the 1600-meter run for his third gold of the afternoon with a time of 4:56.09 and then anchored the mile relay team that clocked a winning time of 3:33.02.
On top of Mynear and White Deer’s day, there were some individual showcases. Booker’s Gael Alvarez won three medals during Wednesday’s area meet. Alvarez earned a victory in the 3200-meter race getting a time of 11:05.24. Alvarez was able to go on and get a silver in the 1600-meter race (5:13.34) and a bronze in the 800-meter (2:19.02).
Shamrock speedster Josh Whittington blazed to a pair of pair of medals and qualify for regionals. Whittington turned on the jets to clock an impressive personal-best time of 10.94 to win the 100-meter dash. He was also part of Shamrock’s bronze medal sprint relay team (45.50) that made it to regional.
Joining the list of strong outings was a pair of hurdlers. Groom’s Jacob Babcock and McLean’s Stran Henderson. Both are excellent at the their craft and will meet once again at the regional meet. Babcock won the 110-meter hurdles thanks to a time of 15.22, and Henderson took the gold in the 300-meter hurdles getting a time of 40.90.
The Region I-1A Track and Field meet is set for May 1-2 on the campus of South Plains College in Levelland.

3-1A/ 4-1A Area Track and Field meet
On a very windy day, the Silverton Lady Owls and Boys Ranch Roughriders were able to overcome the conditions to put on excellent performances and win the 3-1A/ 4-1A Area Track and Field meet team titles Thursday at Younger Field in Tulia.
The Lady Owls ran up 150 points to win the team championship. As she has all year, Silverton senior Maddie Francis was the MVP of the meet qualifying for regional in five events thanks to four gold medals and a silver.
Francis started her day setting a new personal-best by clearing 5-feet-6 inches to win the high jump. Francis went on to win the long jump by hitting a leap of 17-1 1/2. In the running events, Francis swept the hurdle events sprinting to a time of 15.23 in the 100-meter hurdles and then a 45.98 in the 300-meter. Francis also found the silver medal stand as a part of the sprint relay team (52.95).
Nazareth’s Madison Brockman had a busy afternoon. Brockman qualified to regional in three events starting as a part of the sprint relay team that hit a time of 52.64 for a gold. She was then on the 800-meter relay squad that clocked a 1:51.14 for another gold, and won her third gold of the day by winning the 200-meter dash with a 27.60.
Hope McLain of Kress will head to regional in two events thanks to two gold medals. McLain won the gold in the 800-meter run with a 2:38.09 and then the 400-meter race thanks to a 1:03.09.
The Boys Ranch Roughriders handled things on the boys’ side with 143 points for a team championship.
Chase Fritcher, Carter Esteban and Casey Macawile all led the Roughriders. Fritcher won gold in the 300-meter hurdles (45.85) and was a part of the gold medal mile relay team (3:40.87). Esteban won the high jump clearing 5-8, won gold in the 1600-meter race (5:11.50) and won the 3200-meter run (11:00.38), and Macawile popped off a 40-0 1/2 to win the long jump as well as being on the mile relay.
Happy’s Luke Dempsey also had a good day as he’ll head to regional in two events. Dempsey won the discus with a toss of 133-feet. He then took silver in the shot put (41-4 1/2).
