Thursday’s games

District 2-5A
Division I

Lubbock Coronado (2-4, 1-1) at Amarillo High (3-4, 2-1), 7 p.m.
Amarillo High is tough to figure out. Thought last week would be closer against Cooper. Although Coronado had two weeks to prep for this one, the thing the Sandies can do by beating Coronado is show their hunger to move a step closer to clinching a playoff berth. … Amarillo High 31, Coronado 21

Friday’s games

District 2-5A
Division I

Caprock (1-6, 0-3) at Lubbock Monterey (2-4, 0-2) 7 p.m.
The Rock still looking to score points as its been outscored 131-14 its last four games. Monterey proved it can start fast against Tascosa but also showed a lack of discipline right now. The Rock has a chance to find the win column. … Monterey 28, Caprock 14

Lubbock Cooper (4-2, 2-0) at Abilene High (5-2, 2-0) 7 p.m.
The winner won’t officially win the district title, but I see this as the district title game between the top two teams. Abilene at home is the difference. … Abilene High 45, Lubbock Cooper 42

District 2-5A
Division II

Abilene Cooper (1-5, 0-1) at Palo Duro (3-3, 1-0), 7 p.m.
The Dons are alive and kicking some fanny. The last six quarters are some the best ball PD has played under third-year coach Eric Mims. Look for the momentum to continue. … Palo Duro 35, Cooper 21

Lubbock High (2-4, 0-1) at Plainview (4-2, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Plainview is legit going toe-to-toe with Wylie. … Plainview 45, Lubbock High 17

Wichita Falls Rider (4-2, 1-0) at Abilene Wylie (4-2, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Game of the night in 2-5A DII. Winner takes a HUGE step toward putting in its stamp on the district title. … Rider 42, Wylie 31

– Lance Lahnert
Last week: 5-1 (.833)
Season: 19-6 (.760)

Class 4A

District 3-4A
Division I

Pampa (2-5, 0-1) at Randall (4-3, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Desperation on one side clashes with uneasy comfort on the other in the second week of district play for both teams. Randall needed stellar defense to hold on for the final three quarters to beat Dumas by a point and beat-up Pampa got crushed at home by Hereford. All signs point to Randall getting the edge, especially since this is the district home opener for the Raiders. Their offense did struggle most of the game last week, though, so this won’t be a cakewalk, and if the Harvesters stay close, they’ll build some much-needed confidence. … Randall 27, Pampa 13

Canyon (5-1, 0-0) at Hereford (6-1, 1-0), 7 p.m.
This is one of the more intriguing games of the week, as Canyon comes off the open week to start district to face Hereford, a team which has exceeded all expectations after a one-win season last year. Canyon will likely try to establish its productive ground game to keep Hereford’s dynamic passing game off the field as long as possible. That should lead to an interesting contrast in styles and a competitive game. Whoever makes the last big stop defensively might be the key. Give Hereford the edge since the district home opener. … Hereford 24, Canyon 23

District 2-4A
Division II

West Plains (6-1, 1-0) at Levelland (2-5, 0-1), 7 p.m.
West Plains can’t be called an upstart even though the Wolves are in only their second year of operation. They have three straight wins over previously unbeaten opponents, including last week’s 48-23 win over Seminole in their district opener. Levelland is coming off a decisive loss to Levelland last week. The Wolves are balanced offensively with quarterback Reid Macon throwing to various receivers and Jordi Hernandez pounding away at opponents on the ground. Their biggest obstacle this week might be overconfidence. … West Plains 47, Levelland 7

Borger (3-3, 0-0) at Seminole (6-1, 0-1), 7 p.m.
These teams have a lot to prove but for different reasons. Borger is much improved and drew the open week to start district last week, giving the Bulldogs an extra week to prepare for Seminole. The Indians are smarting from last week’s rout at West Plains and are looking to re-establish themselves as a valid contender. Borger faces the bigger challenge as the Bulldogs will find out quickly what they need to do to make the playoffs against a quality team. They’ll get answers, if not the ones they want. … Seminole 34, Borger 14

– Lee Passmore
Last week 4-0 (1.000)
Season 29-8 (.784)

Class 3A

District 2-3A
Division I

Shallowater (3-3, 0-0) at Dalhart (6-1, 1-0), 7 p.m.
The Mustangs were the perennial favorite coming into the season and though injuries have riddled them so far, Shallowater is always a tough team to beat. This will be massive if the Golden Wolves can get the victory. … Shallowater 34, Dalhart 27

River Road (1-6, 0-1) at Bushland (6-1, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Simply, the Falcons just outmatch River Road on each side of the ball. … Bushland 42, River Road 7

Class 3A
Division II

Spearman (3-3, 1-0) at Canadian (6-0, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Give the Lynx credit, they’ll do a great job of trying to keep the ball away from the high-potent Wildcat offense. But in the end, Canadian rolls. … Canadian 48, Spearman 13

Tulia (1-5, 0-1) at Childress (3-3, 0-1), 7 p.m.
The Bobcats find the district win column convincing fashion. … Childress 45, Tulia 8

Friona (3-3, 1-0) at Dimmitt (1-5, 0-1), 7 p.m.
There is new life around the Chieftains who are riding a three-game win streak. Expect that momentum to keep on rolling into Bobcat land. … Friona 38, Dimmitt 14

Season: 36-5 (.878)

Class 2A

District 1-2A
Division I

Stratford (6-0, 1-0) at Panhandle (6-0, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Here’s the game of the night in the Texas Panhandle no matter the division with the winner more than likely bringing home the district championship. The Elks live for big games and will have the best football player on the field in QB-LB Bryce Braden. The Panthers are a young, surprise team that has surpassed expectation but can play with anyone thanks to the play of new QB Broxton Robinson. This will be worth the price of admission. … Stratford 36, Panhandle 28

Farwell (4-2, 0-1) at Sanford-Fritch (0-6, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Look for the Steers to bounce back from a district opening loss by taking their frustration out on the Eagles. … Farwell 47, Fritch 7

West Texas High (3-3, 1-0) at Highland Park (4-2, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Here’s one of the better games on the schedule with major playoff implications. The winner is more than likely positioning themselves for at least the fourth spot out of 1-2A Division I. If the Hornets offense can sling it, they can win it. … Highland Park 50, West Texas High 28

District 1-2A
Division II

Vega (2-5, 1-0) at Gruver (5-2, 0-0), 7 p.m.
The winner of this game positions themselves to take on Sunray for a district championship. The Longhorns played much better last week, but the Greyhounds physicality and playmakers are the difference. … Gruver 34, Vega 16

Sunray (6-1, 0-0) at Boys Ranch (2-5, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Not many teams are playing better football right now than the Bobcats. … Sunray 55, Boys Ranch 7

District 2-2A
Division II

Wellington (4-2, 1-0) at Memphis (0-5, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Don’t expect this game to last very long. It’s just a rough year for the Cyclones. … Wellington 50, Memphis 6

Clarendon (3-3, 1-0) at Quanah (1-5, 1-0), 7 p.m.
Clarendon is playing good football after a tough 0-3 start to the year. Let’s bank on the Broncos making it four straight W’s. … Clarendon 46, Quanah 8

Shamrock (3-3, 0-1) at Wheeler (1-5, 0-1), 7 p.m.
These two towns don’t like each other and don’t even try to hide it. The Mustangs are big up front and physical, but will they have enough to keep up with a speedy Irish team. … Shamrock 33, Wheeler 20

District 3-2A
Division II

Crosbyton (0-6, 0-1) at Bovina (1-5, 0-1), 7 p.m.
Former Bovina head coach Coby Emery brings his Chieftains to town for what the Mustangs hope is not a happy Homecoming. … Bovina 41, Crosbyton 12

– Kale Steed
Last week: 8-2 (.800)
Season: 49-18 (.731)

Class 1A

District 1-1A
Division II

Hedley (2-4, 0-0) at Lefors (1-6, 0-1), 7 p.m.
This game will likely decide who grabs third in the district. If the Pirates defense can keep Nick Clark in check, then it will be time for a victory celebration on the Pirate ship. …Lefors 68, Hedley 52

Silverton (5-2, 1-0) at Groom (3-4, 1-0), 7:30 p.m.
Barring something unforeseen this is a matchup for the district title. The Tigers are so tough to beat at home and would love nothing more than to upset the favored Owls.  The best player on the field, Silverton’s Sawyer Francis, will be the difference in this one.  rancis will run wild as the Owls make up for last year’s last second loss. …Silverton 62, Groom 38

Non-district

Happy (5-1) at Booker (5-2), 7 p.m.
Another long road trip for the Cowboys to take on an upstart Kiowas squad that has found this new style of football to their liking. Booker will be hyped to make a statement at home but Happy’s defense and punishing ground game will be too much to overcome to pull that off. …Happy 58, Booker 18
