Thursday’s games

Class 5A

District 2-5A Division I

Caprock (4-1, 1-0) vs. Amarillo High (2-3, 0-1), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
It’s The Rock vs. The Sandies in a city rivalry game;
This first one played in 1963, man, that’s some fame.
The Sandies are coming off a rough one to say the least.
Meanwhile, The Rock opened district like a beast.
AHS has to get Garcia the ball a lot and in space,
Or, watch out, Acosta-Lewis and Co. go 2-0 in the district race.
… Caprock 27, AHS 24

Class 4A

Dumas (3-2) vs. El Paso Austin (2-3), at Ratliff Stadium, Odessa 7 p.m
Dumas had a three-game winning streak rudely interrupted at home by undefeated Bushland last week and the Demons face a short week in getting ready for their final tune-up before district play starts. It will be a long road trip to a neutral site against a team they could possibly see in the playoffs, but they should be hungry to get back into winning form. … Dumas 42, Austin 14

Class 1A

Loop (4-0) at Silverton (3-2), 7 p.m.
Sometimes records don’t tell the whole story. Loop is undefeated but their opponents are a combined 6-11. The Owls roll in this one. … Silverton 58 Loop 12

Friday’s games

Class 5A

District 2-5A Division I

Abilene High (2-3, 1-0) at Tascosa (4-1, 1-0), 7:00 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
Tascosa put on quite a district-opening display in all phases of the game beating Amarillo High 45-10. Tascosa’s defense is the real deal led by TCU commit Avion Carter. Abilene High will make this close for half, then it’s all Tascosa. … Tascosa 42, Abilene 21

Lubbock Coronado (1-4, 0-1) at Lubbock Cooper (3-1, 0-0), 7:00 p.m., Pirate Stadium at First United Park
This is the district opener for a very good Cooper team. Coronado will be hungry after opening district with that home loss to Caprock. It’s all Cooper. … Cooper 34, Coronado 17

– Lance Lahnert
– Last week: 3-0 (1.000)
– Season: 11-4 (.733)

Class 4A

Andrews (3-1) at Canyon (5-0), 7 p.m.
Like Dumas, Canyon is closing out its predistrict schedule and looking for a solid performance to build momentum. The question going forward for the undefeated Eagles is if they’re going to do so without quarterback Derrek Clements, who went out with an injury late in last week’s win at Greenwood. They’ll host a tough opponent with Andrews but sitting at home for an opponent making a long trip gives them an advantage. … Canyon 20, Andrews 19

West Plains (2-3) at Hereford (0-5), 7 p.m.
West Plains is playing as well as anybody in the Amarillo metro area with two straight wins before heading into district. Hereford did break a four-game streak of giving up at least 50 points to opponents last week against Plainview, but it still couldn’t translate into a win. The Wolves carry all the momentum into this one and will come back home even for the season, although the Herd’s firepower will make it interesting. … West Plains 38, Hereford 24

Borger (2-3) at Pampa (3-2), 7 p.m.
One of the Panhandle’s most storied rivalries returns in a nondistrict fashion between two teams coming off opposite results in close games last week, with Borger falling to Dalhart and Pampa edging Perryton. Pampa has the homefield advantage and the momentum of a victory to take into this week, so look for the Harvesters to use their strong running game to overtake the Bulldogs in an entertaining game. … Pampa 35, Borger 22

Stratford (4-0) at Perryton (1-4), 7 p.m.
Two teams headed in opposite directions, as defending Class 2A Division II state champion Stratford comes off a bye after winning four straight to start the season, while Perryton has lost four straight playing a tough schedule. Both teams have something to prove, but Stratford has had an extra week to prepare for this one and the Elks have traditionally performed well against bigger schools. … Stratford 32, Perryton 20

– Lee Passmore
– Last week: 4-2 (.666)
– Season: 23-7 (.766)

Class 3A

Randall (4-1) at Canadian (2-2), 7 p.m.
What an intriguing matchup between two teams facing off for the first time. Randall has the numbers, but the Wildcats have the size and speed to keep pace. … Canadian 35, Randall 27

El Paso Riverside (5-0) at Bushland (5-0), 7 p.m.
Riverside makes the 400 plus mile trip to Bushland for a battle of unbeatens. The Rangers are scary in the form of Division I QB Andrew “Speedy” Munoz, however, the Falcons are playing on an entirely different level at the moment. … Bushland 42, Riverside 20

Levelland (1-4) at Dalhart (2-2), 7 p.m.
The Golden Wolves are unbeaten at home and continue to play hard for fallen teammate Yahir Cancino. Go with Dalhart for another home W. … Dalhart 37, Levelland 23

Brownfield (5-0) at Muleshoe (4-1), 7 p.m.
Brownfield coach Aaarhon Flores, a former West Texas A&M standout, has his Cubs playing exceptional football. The Mules have also been on the top of their game. … Brownfield 38, Muleshoe 28

Slaton (0-5) at Friona (1-3), 7 p.m.
This will be all Chieftains in a big way. … Friona 45, Slaton 13

Class 2A

Sunray (4-1) vs. Roscoe (3-1), 6 p.m. at Pirates Stadium, Lubbock-Cooper
If the Bobcats set the tone early with their explosive offense it could be a tough night for the Plowboys. … Sunray 30, Roscoe 22

River Road (2-3) at Gruver (4-1), 7 p.m.
The Greyhounds keep fighting and finding ways to win big games. Can they make it three in a row. … Gruver 22, River Road 20

Wheeler (1-3) at Boys Ranch (3-2), 7 p.m.
The Roughriders have been on a rollercoaster of late. May be being back home gives them a little more consistency. … Boys Ranch 26, Wheeler 16

Olton (4-0) at Vega (1-4), 7 p.m.
The Mustangs are a very quiet 4-0 and playing solid football. The Longhorns are much better than their record looks and are still hoping to get healthy before district starts. … Olton 24, Vega 21

– Kale Steed
– Last week: 10-3 (.769)
– Season: 56-19 (.746)

Class 1A

Follett (3-1) at Paducah (5-0), 7 p.m.
The Dragons are a solid team and tough to beat at home, but the Panthers are just a better team and will drop the Dragons from the ranks of the unbeaten. … Follett 56 Paducah 20

McLean (5-0) at Wildorado (1-4), 7 p.m.
The Tigers will continue to roll their competition as they get ready for a big matchup next week with Happy. … McLean 68 Wildorado 22

White Deer (4-1) at Hedley (2-3), 7 p.m.
After dropping their first game of the season last week look for the Bucks to rebound. It won’t be easy though as the Owls are scrappy. … White Deer 52 Hedley 20

Amherst (3-1) at Claude (3-2), 7 p.m.
Another tough test for the Mustangs as the Bulldogs are playing well. Try as they might I think Amherst takes this one on the road. … Amherst 48 Claude 27

Nazareth (5-0) at Whitharral (4-1), 7:30 p.m.
Size vs. Speed.  Schulte vs. Weaver.  You don’t want to miss this one as the Swifts use their size to beat a top ten team. … Nazareth 44 Whitharral 40

Miami (4-1) at Groom (1-4), 7:30 p.m.
It’s hard to imagine that the Tigers could end the night as a 1-5 team, but the Warriors are playing well. The size of Luke Wheeler up front will be the difference. … Miami 74 Groom 48

Crowell (1-4) at Valley (2-3), 7:30 p.m.
Last week Crowell played a really good Knox City team close while Valley got a starter back. The more the Patriots get healthy the better they get. … Valley 58 Crowell 20

– Craig Sperry
– Last Week: 8-2 (.800)
– Season: 40-11 (.784)
