On the field: Everhart was asked to step forward for the Rebels when they opened the playoffs last week by hosting El Paso El Dorado in a Class 5A Division I bidistrict game. Tascosa was missing starting quarterback B.T. Daniel, who broke his ankle a week earlier in the regular season finale against Lubbock Coronado and is out for the rest of the season. Everhart, who usually starts at safety and running back, was inserted behind center in Daniel’s place and wasted no time in making his mark on the offense. He kept the ball on Tascosa’s first play from scrimmage and ran 85 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone for a 53-7 win, marking the fourth straight year the Rebels had won a playoff game for the first time in school history. That was just the beginning of Everhart’s night, as he finished with 229 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. It was reminiscent of a game a year earlier against Amarillo High, when Everhart played quarterback out of the Wildcat formation and led the Rebels to victory from a 27-point deficit. Everhart, who has committed to play for TCU, effective ended his night and the competitive phase of the game by returning a punt 57 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Coach Ken Plunk: “We were confident even though we were very disappointed with losing B.T. Major had some snaps back there before anyway. We’re really a quarterback-centric team anyway when it comes to running the ball. We’re going to add some more things this week. We obviously have a little more speed with Major back there. We don’t really have to change our offense. I don’t think we’ll change anything, we’ll just expand. People are going to try to take something away and we’re going to have to go with something else. We felt like if he was going to play quarterback he’d have to play the entire game on the offensive side of the ball.”
Everhart: “We repped it in practice and I just trusted my line. They blocked very well for me and I went off the holes they gave me. We keep practicing hard to come out with the aggression we do. I didn’t change anything at all. I know I’m a ball player so I just come out here and play and I have the teammates around me to help carry me and get this W. We know we have guys who can come in and play defense as well who are just as good as me. We looked back at (last year’s Amarillo High) game and saw what happened. We definitely thought we could come out here and do that again. We’ve just got to do the same thing and get better and better on offense. I just need improve on my reads.”
