Camren Cavalier and Luke Flowers, Canadian, QB-WR
The Cavalier-Flowers combination helped the Canadian Wildcats make an early season statement during a 55-35 beating of Bushland on Friday night. The dual-threat Cavalier racked up 472 yards of offense on his own. Through the air, Cavalier went 20-of-30 for 325 yards with five touchdown passes and chewed up 172 yards on the ground on 17 carries. Flowers was a complete mismatch for the Falcon secondary snagging five catches for 157 yards with four touchdowns.
Ryan Leathers, Amarillo High, WR-DB, Sr.
The senior two-way standout was a major factor in Amarillo High’s come-from-behind overtime, 28-27, win at Cleveland, N.M. Offensively, Leathers caught six passes for 54 yards with two touchdowns, including a fourth quarter touchdown to force OT. Defensively, Leathers was a menace making 13 tackles and had the game-winning tackle on a 2-point conversion attempt to seal the victory for the Sandies.
Darien Lewis, Palo Duro, QB-DB, Soph.
The Palo Duro Dons earned their first win of 2023 holding off Caprock 20-14 at Dick Bivins Stadium on Friday night. Lewis shined in the victory using his speed to run for a game-high 119 yards on 13 totes with a score and threw for 98 yards. Lewis also had a game-sealing interception on defense.
Corey Stancell, Farwell, RB, Sr.
It was a career night for Farwell’s outstanding senior during a 34-0 shutout of Vega on the road Friday night. Stancell ran right through the Longhorn defense piling up 218 yards on 21 carries with two scores. Thanks to the huge rushing night, Stancell has gone over 5,000 career rushing yards for his four-year career as he now sits at 5,207 yards on 608 carries with 75 career TDs.
Dylan Ray, Randall, RB, Jr.
Ray led head coach Dan Sherwood to his first win as Randall’s head coach as the Raiders dominated Clovis, N.M., 50-23. Touching the ball only 11 times, Ray found paydirt four times finishing with 128 yards rushing.
Dallas Pennington, Panhandle, DB, Soph.
Pennington played a major factor on the defensive side of the ball during the Panhandle Panthers 53-20 route of Friona. The sophomore had a night to remember making two interceptions, one of which he returned for a pick-six, adding two tackles.
KJ Jennings, Borger, QB, Sr.
The Borger gunslinger did all he could to help first-year head coach Dane Hamrick earn his first career victory. Jennings picked a part the River Road defense in a 42-0 shutout by going a near perfect 12-of-14 for 255 yards with two touchdown tosses and added two more rushing scores on 42 yards rushing.
JP Carbajal, Spearman, RB, Jr.
Carbajal may still be running through the Texas Panhandle after the performance he put on for Spearman in a 48-9 blistering of Sanford-Fritch. Carbajal simply couldn’t be stopped racking up 259 yards on only 21 carries, averaging 12.3 yards per carry, with four touchdowns.
Sam Johnson, Canyon, RB, Sr.
Canyon used a pummeling ground game to beat Perryton 42-34 on Friday led by Johnson’s bruising effort. The Eagles chewed up 308 yards on the ground with Johnson rushing for 132 of those yards on 19 carries as he found the endzone four times.
Phillip Cook, Shamrock, QB, Jr.
Shamrock earned its first win of the season by doubling up West Texas High, 28-14, while getting head coach Nate Skelton his first career victory. Cook can take a lot of credit thanks to his effort throwing for 218 yards on 19-of-31 passing with a touchdown. Cook also added 61 yards rushing with two more TDs.
