A handful of track and field meets took place during spring break week across the Texas Panhandle and on the South Plains on Thursday and Friday.
Highlighting the Amarillo-area was the annual St. Patrick’s Day Relays in Shamrock on Thursday where the Canadian teams made it a clean sweep. The Wildcats totaled 178 points for the boys team title while the Lady Cats scored 160 points to win.

Leading Canadian on the boys’ side was Bridger Burris who took home gold in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.30. Teammate Marcus Herrera won both gold medals in the shot put and discus. Herrera tossed a 44-4 in the shot put and then a 127-2 to claim the discus title.
The Wellington Skyrockets relay teams were very impressive as the Rockets took victories in all three events. The sprint relay team of Travon Lewis, Brenden Garcia, Kamron Brooks and DeMarcus Lewis clocked a 43.72 to beat Canadian. The 800-meter relay of that same four-some ran a 1:31.3 to win that event and in the mile relay, Troy Molina, Garcia, Brooks and PJ Garcia had a gold medal winning time of 3:28.6.
Booker’s Adrian Rosales made it a clean sweep in the long-distance races. The Kiowas standout opened Thursday running a 10:17 to get on the gold medal stand in the 3200-meter race. In the 800-meter run, Rosales paced the field with a 2:03.4 and finished his day with his third goal running a 4:45.97 to win the 1600-meter race.
In girls action, Canadian’s Arionna Black and Konnar McClendon led a strong team effort. Black found the gold medal stand three different times starting by winning the 800-meter race with a time of 2:25.95. Black then won the 400-meter run with a 1:01.51 and was part of the Lady Cats mile relay team that won gold with a 4:12.60.
Teammate McClendon was just as impressive in the long-distance events. McClendon paced the field in the 3200-meter race to grab gold with a time of 12:02. Later in the day, McClendon once again found the medal stand earning gold in the 1600-meter race with a 5:38.71.
On top of those performances, Scout Burris of West Texas High had a tremendous outing. Burris swept the hurdle events running a 16.11 to get gold in the 100-hurdles and followed that up with a 49.53 to nab a victory in the 300-meter hurdles. Burris won her third goal earlier Thursday morning leaping 32-feet in the triple jump.
Weekend quick hits
The Canyon Lady Eagles made a trip to the Metroplex well worth it by winning the Mansfield Timberview Relays racking up 150 points. Addyson Bristow and Avery Brown were key in the team victory. Bristow continues her incredible season winning the 800-meter race with a 2:11.86, then the 1600-meter run clocking a 4:43.43 and was a part of the mile relay team to win gold with a 3:57.56. Brown won the 3200-meter run with an 11:44.7, and was silver in the 1600-meter event (5:08.69).
At the New Deal Relays, the Farwell Lady Blue picked up where they left in basketball winning the girls championship with 155 points. Bella Jaime had a superb outing Thursday gaining gold in the 800-meter run with a 2:24.82 and then won the 400-meter race (1:01.61). Jaime was also part of a mile relay team that won gold running a 4:20.63. Teammate Lexi Wade won the 3200-meter event (12:17.34) and the 1600-meter race (5:43.32).
At the Littlefield Relays, Bushland’s Slade Perry showed off his speed sprinting to a gold medal time of 10.95 to win the 100-meter dash. Perry then won the 200-meter race with a 22:30. Muleshoe’s Vida Mora also had a great showing running a 25.45 to win the 200-meter event and a 59.12 to get gold in the 400-meter run.
