Farwell takes down Stratford

The Farwell Steers continue to prove themselves as legit contenders in Class 2A.

On Friday night, the Steers used a huge night from Ryder McElroy to stop Stratford 60-44 during a Class 2A area round clash at the Amarillo High Activity Center.

McElroy didn’t miss lighting up the Elks for a game-high 33 points behind six 3-pointers on the night. Teammate Hudson Agee chipped in with 10.

Stratford (10-11), which had a big win over Wellington in Tuesday’s bi-district round, stayed with Farwell in the first half trailing 34-33 at the break. The second half was a little different story. Farwell caught fire outscoring the Elks 18-4 in the third to take over the game.

The Steers (25-9) advance to play Floydada (26-8) in the regional quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined. The Whirlwinds beat Wheeler 85-76 on Friday.

District 4-4A makes another statement

District 4-4A is proving to be one of the toughest districts in all of the state.

For a second straight round, Randall, Canyon, West Plains and Hereford made it a clean sweep and they will now all play each other in Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal.

Randall went over the century mark for a third game in a row and the seventh time this season by pounding El Paso Riverside in the area round 101-30. KJ Thomas was on-point in this contest scoring a game-high 37 points.

Canyon cruised by El Paso Bowie 70-38 on Thursday with Jordan Webber pouring in 15 points followed by Kelson Jones with 13.

West Plains is in the third round for the first time in program history. The Wolves worked over Clint Mountain View 71-38. Wiley Killham tallied a game-high 11, and Hereford completed the sweep downing San Elizario 58-49 on Friday night behind Ty Duque’s 13 points.

A doubleheader is now set for Tuesday night in the regional quarterfinals at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.

Hereford (21-10) will take on Randall (31-3) at 6 p.m. followed by Canyon (21-10) battling rival West Plains (25-8) at 7:30 p.m.
